Poly(lactide) (PLA) is a promising biodegradable polymer with potential applications in single-use packaging. However, its use is limited by brittleness, and its biodegradability is restricted to industrial compost conditions due in part to an elevated glass transition temperature (). We previously showed that addition of a poly(ethylene-oxide)--poly(butylene oxide) diblock copolymer (PEO-PBO) forms macrophase-separated rubbery domains in PLA that can impart significant toughness at only 5 wt %.

Aqueous poloxamer 407 (P407; also referred to as F127) undergoes a solution-to-gel transition with increasing temperature, driven by the formation and ordering of micelles onto periodic lattices; however, the gel temperature and resulting modulus has limited tunability. Here, reverse P407 (RP407), a BAB polymer of the same composition and molar mass but the inverted architecture, is synthesized via anionic polymerization.

Here, a renewable H-polymer efficiently synthesized using only ring-opening transesterification is demonstrated. The strategy relies on a tetrafunctional poly(±-lactide) macroinitiator, from which four poly(±-lactide) branches are grown simultaneously.

While most existing CPEs interact strongly with the lipid bilayers in the stratum corneum to create defects as diffusion paths, their interactions with the delivery system, such as polymers forming a hydrogel, can compromise gelation, formulation stability, and drug diffusion. To overcome this challenge, differing interactions between CPEs and the hydrogel system are explored, especially those with sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), an ionic surfactant and a common CPE, and those with methyl laurate (ML), a nonionic counterpart with a similar length alkyl chain.

The measured structural relaxation times are Bragg scattering wavevector independent and are 5 times faster in the dodecagonal quasicrystal than the σ phase, with minimal temperature dependence. The underlying dynamical relaxations are ascribed to differences in particle motion at the grain boundaries within each of these tetrahedrally close-packed assemblies.

Small amounts of hydroxyl terminated PS additives that can undergo transesterification with the ester units in PBT were added to stabilize the cocontinuous structure during melt processing. The resulting fibers are highly ductile and display fine porous structural features, which persist at temperatures over 150 °C.

The aim of the current study was to explore how polymer composition, architecture, molar mass, and surfactant concentration affect polymer-drug nanodroplet morphology with the breast cancer API, GDC-0810. The impact of nanodroplet size and morphology on dissolution efficacy and drug loading capacity was explored using polarized light microscopy, dynamic light scattering, and cryogenic transmission electron microscopy.

Owing to distinct properties compared with linear counterparts, bottlebrush block polymers with side chains densely grafted on a backbone have attracted extensive attention. However, the morphologies found in bottlebrush block polymers so far are limited, and only lamellar and cylindrical ordered phases have been reported in diblock bottlebrushes.

These block copolymers are useful in a variety of applications including therapeutics for Duchenne muscular dystrophy, as cell membrane stabilizers, and for drug delivery, as liposome surface modifying agents. Hydrogen bonding between water and oxygen atoms in PEO and PPO units results in thermoresponsive behavior because the bound water shell around both blocks dehydrates as the temperature increases.

A promising strategy for recycling polyethylene (PE) and isotactic polypropylene (PP), constituting roughly half the plastic produced annually worldwide, is melt blending for reformulation into useful products. Unfortunately, such blends are generally brittle and useless due to phase separation and mechanically weak domain interfaces.

DMD patients develop severe skeletal muscle weakness, degeneration, and early death. We tested here amphiphilic synthetic membrane stabilizers in mdx skeletal muscle fibers (flexor digitorum brevis; FDB) to determine their effectiveness in restoring contractile function in dystrophin-deficient live skeletal muscle fibers.

One of the promising strategies to develop such a vaccine is to induce robust CD8+ T cell mediated immunity against malaria liver-stage parasites.

Aqueous solutions of poloxamer 407 (P407), a commercially available and nontoxic ABA triblock polymer (PEO-PPO-PEO), undergo a solution-to-gel transition with increasing temperature and are promising candidates for injectable therapeutics. The gel transition temperature, modulus, and structure are all dictated by polymer concentration, preventing independent tuning of these properties. Here, we show that addition of BAB reverse poloxamers (RPs) to P407-based solutions dramatically alters the gelation temperature, modulus, and morphology.

The resulting crosslinked bicontinuous microemulsions exhibited rubbery behavior at elevated temperatures, achieving an elastic shear modulus of nearly 1 MPa at 70 °C, owing to the presence of the three-dimensional co-continuous network morphology.

The calculations focus on establishing conditions that promote the formation of Laves phases by tuning the relative softness of the cores of the two different Laves phase particles independent control of their conformational asymmetries. Increasing the conformational asymmetry of the more spherical particles of the Laves structure has a stabilizing effect, consistent with the expectations of increased imprinting of the Wigner-Seitz cells on the core/corona interface as conformational asymmetry increases.

However, coil configurations limit conventional linear block polymers to finite ordered network dimensions, which are further restricted by slow self-assembly kinetics at high molecular weights. A bottlebrush architecture can circumvent both shortcomings owing to extended backbone configurations due to side chain crowding and molecular dynamics substantially free of chain entanglements.

Due to its low cost, stiffness, and recyclability, isotactic polypropylene (iPP) is an excellent candidate for packaging applications. However, iPP is notoriously difficult to thermoform due to its low melt strength. The addition of just 10 thin layers of high-molecular-weight, linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) into iPP sheets by coextrusion significantly increased extensional viscosity and reduced sag.
