Background: Exploration of the degree to which perceived chronic stress is heritable is important as these self-reports have been linked to stress-related health outcomes. The aims of this study were to estimate whether perceived stress is a heritable condition and to assess whether heritability estimates vary between subjective stress reactivity and stress related to external demands.
Method: A sample of 103 monozygotic and 77 dizygotic twin pairs completed three questionnaires designed to measure perceived stress: the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), the Measure for the Assessment of Stress Susceptibility (MESA) and the Trier Inventory for the Assessment of Chronic Stress (TICS).

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by cognitive decline and loss of neurons in specific brain regions. Recent findings have suggested an involvement of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in the pathogenesis of AD. BDNF is an endogenous protein involved in the maintenance of neuronal function, synaptic plasticity and structural integrity in the adult brain.

Most trials have been conducted in single centers. The National Emphysema Treatment Trial (NETT) provided an opportunity to evaluate pulmonary rehabilitation in a large cohort of patients who were treated in centers throughout the United States.

The aim of this study was to identify subtypes of aggression within the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) aggression scale, and determine their characteristics for both sexes. Maternal CBCL ratings of 7449 7-year-old twin pairs were analyzed using principal components analyses to identify subtypes of aggression, and structural equation modeling to carry out genetic analyses.

Family studies have shown that anorexia (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN) are strongly familial, and that familial etiologic factors appear to be shared by both disorders. Twin studies often focus on broader phenotypes or subthreshold eating disorders.

Twelve patients with MSA-P and 10 age-matched control subjects performed the task with each of three object weights (200, 400, 800 gm). Subjects moved at a self-selected pace using a precision grip.

The lower limit of quantitation was 2 ng/mL. Linearity of the calibration curve was greater than 0.

In response to specific stimuli, the HIV-1 long terminal repeat (LTR) is highly activated, enhancing both transcriptional initiation and elongation. Here, we have identified a specific binding sequence of the nuclear NF-kappaB-repressing factor (NRF) within the HIV-1 LTR.

Systemic bioavailability of chemicals was determined by calculating area under the plasma concentration curve over 24 h (AUC-24 h) using complete sets of data (> or =5 data points) and also three, two, and one selected time points. The best predictions of AUC-24 h were made when three time points were used, corresponding to Cmax, a mid-morning sample, and C(min).

Hitherto, findings on systemic immunological alterations are inconsistent. We measured the concentrations of the pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-1beta, IL-2, IL-6, and TNF-alpha, and of the soluble receptors sIL-2r, sIL-6r, and sTNF-alphar, in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and serum of 20 Alzheimer patients and 21 controls.

Methods: Artisan toric PIOLs were implanted uneventfully in both eyes of three patients with keratoconus with clear central corneas and contact lens intolerance.
Results: Best spectacle-corrected subjective visual acuity after lens implantation was unchanged in one eye and improved in five eyes.
To determine potential nitrosation of triethanolamine (TEA) to N-nitrosodiethanolamine (NDELA) at different physiological conditions of the GI tract, in vitro NDELA formation was examined in aqueous reaction mixtures at several pHs (2-10) adjusted with acetic, sulphuric or hydrochloric acids or in cultures of mouse cecal microflora incubated. In vivo NDELA formation was also determined in blood, ingesta, and urine of female B6C3F1 mice after repeated dermal, most relevant human route, or single oral exposure to 1000 mg/kg TEA in the presence of high oral dosages of NaNO(2). Appropriate diethanolamine (DEA) controls were included to account for this impurity in the TEA used.

Case Report: A 32-year-old woman presented with a bipolar affective disorder and Hashimoto's thyroiditis. Neurological investigations (magnetic resonance imaging of the brain and cerebrospinal fluid) did not reveal any pathological findings except for a pathological electroencephalogram (EEG).
Study Objectives: Diffuse parenchymal lung disease is associated with a high risk of mortality despite early referral and listing for lung transplantation. We hypothesized that cardiopulmonary exercise test results and the distance walked in 6min (6MWTD) would be associated with survival in patients with diffuse parenchymal lung disease referred for lung transplantation.
Design: Retrospective cohort study.
Quality of life is becoming an increasingly important concept in the evaluation of different therapeutic interventions. In this cross-sectional study, quality of life analyzed in 76 renal transplant patients was compared with 65 patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) awaiting transplantation. Both groups were asked to estimate their subjective quality of life by responding to a multidimensional questionnaire that sought information in the following areas: (1) sociodemographic data, (2) a personality test (Giessen-Test), (3) information about employment, (4) assessment of anxiety and depression (GHQ-28), (5) the SF-36 as an important measurement for quality of life, and (6) the ESRD symptom checklist-transplantation module.

Although renal toxicity has long been recognized as a potential outcome, in recent years developmental toxicity, an effect observed only in rats and mice, has become the subject of extensive research and regulatory reviews to establish guidelines for human exposures. The developmental toxicity of EG has been attributed to the intermediate metabolite, glycolic acid (GA), which can become a major metabolite when EG is administered to rats and mice at high doses and dose rates.

Cerebral inflammation as well as systemic immunological alterations have been reported in Alzheimer's disease (AD). We examined the production of the proinflammatory cytokines interleukin-6, interleukin-12, interferon-gamma, and tumor necrosis factor-alpha in whole blood cell cultures of AD patients and age-matched controls. The production of all measured cytokines after mitogen stimulation is significantly decreased in the AD group compared to controls.

This technique permitted identification of the specific location of protein adduction by both MNU and MMS with commercial apomyoglobin and human hemoglobin, under physiological conditions.
