Metabolic profile modifications in milk after enrofloxacin administration studied by liquid chromatography coupled with high resolution mass spectrometry.

High resolution accurate mass spectrometry (HRMS) operating in full scan MS mode was used in the search and identification of metabolites in raw milk from cows medicated with enrofloxacin. Data consisting of m/z features were taken throughout the entire chromatogram of milk samples from medicated animals and were compared with blank samples. Twenty six different compounds were identified.

Translation and psychometric evaluation of a Standard Chinese version of the Body Appreciation Scale-2.

The present study examined the factorial and construct validity of a Standard Chinese translation of the Body Appreciation Scale (BAS-2; Tylka & Wood-Barcalow, 2015b). Participants were 191 women and 154 men from mainland China who were resident in Hong Kong at the time of recruitment. Results of confirmatory factor analysis indicated that the one-dimensional model of the BAS-2, in which all 10 items loaded onto the same factor, had adequate fit, and was invariant across sex.

Psychometric properties of the Drive for Muscularity Scale in Malay men.

The Drive for Muscularity Scale (DMS) is a widely used measure in studies of men's body image, but few studies have examined its psychometric properties outside English-speaking samples. Here, we assessed the factor structure of a Malay translation of the DMS. A community sample of 159 Malay men from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, completed the DMS, along with measures of self-esteem, body appreciation, and muscle discrepancy.

The LC8 family of small ~8 kD proteins are highly conserved and interact with multiple protein partners in eukaryotic cells. LC8-binding modulates target protein activity, often through induced dimerization via LC8:LC8 homodimers. Although many LC8-interactors have roles in signaling cascades, LC8's role in developing epithelia is poorly understood.

Methods: A retrospective analysis of the 2005 through 2010 National Congenital Heart Disease Audit database was performed.

Here, we examined associations between belief in conspiracy theories and individual differences in personality disorders. An Internet-based sample (N=259) completed measures of belief in conspiracy theories and the 25 facets of the Personality Inventory for DSM-5 (PID-5).

Evaluation of public involvement in research: time for a major re-think?

The way that public involvement in research has been evaluated as a complex intervention has derailed the development of an evidence base. Two alternative approaches are available for constructing and evaluating patient involvement, each of which requires us to revisit the purposes and values that underpin it in each stage of the research process.

Wildlife contamination with fluoroquinolones from livestock: Widespread occurrence of enrofloxacin and marbofloxacin in vultures.

There is much recent interest in the presence and impact of veterinary pharmaceuticals in wildlife. Livestock carcasses are often disposed of in supplementary feeding stations for avian scavengers, as a management and conservation tool for these species worldwide. In feeding stations, vultures and other scavengers can consume carcasses almost immediately after disposal, which implies the potential ingestion of veterinary pharmaceuticals as a non-target consequence of supplementary feeding.

Much of what was assumed about the functional topography of the hippocampus was derived from a single case study over half a century ago. Given advances in the imaging sciences, a new era of discovery is underway, with potential to transform the understanding of healthy processing as well as the ability to treat disorders. Coactivation-based parcellation, a meta-analytic approach, and ultra-high field, high-resolution functional and structural neuroimaging to characterize the neurofunctional topography of the hippocampus was employed.

Patterns of gray matter atrophy in atypical parkinsonism syndromes: a VBM meta-analysis.

Background And Purpose: Accurate diagnosis of Atypical Parkinsonian Syndromes (APS) is important due to differences in prognosis and management, but remains a challenge in the clinical setting. The purpose of our meta-analysis was to identify characteristic patterns of gray matter atrophy in Corticobasal Degeneration (CBD), Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP), Multisystem-Atrophy Parkinsonian type (MSA-P), and Idiopathic Parkinson's Disease (IPD).

Materials And Methods: Whole-brain meta-analysis was performed on 39 published voxel-based morphometry (VBM) articles (consisting of 404 IPD, 87 MSA-P, 165 CBD, and 176 PSP subjects) using the modified Anatomic Likelihood Estimation method.

Reflection effects during the radiation sterilization of ultra high molecular weight polyethylene for total knee replacements.

Ultra high molecular weight polyethylene has been subject to γ irradiation whilst in contact with a stainless steel backing. This leads to reflection of the incident radiation and to backscattered electrons, both of which contribute to an effective increase in dose received. Radiation induced damage through scission of inter-lamellae tie chains results in an increase in crystallinity.

Trends in 30-day mortality rate and case mix for paediatric cardiac surgery in the UK between 2000 and 2010.

Objectives: To explore changes over time in the 30-day mortality rate for paediatric cardiac surgery and to understand the role of attendant changes in the case mix.

Methods Setting And Participants: Included were: all mandatory submissions to the National Institute of Cardiovascular Outcomes Research (NICOR) relating to UK cardiac surgery in patients aged <16 years. The χ(2) test for trend was used to retrospectively analyse the proportion of surgical episodes ending in 30-day mortality and with various case mix indicators, in 10 consecutive time periods, from 2000 to 2010.

Human pulvinar functional organization and connectivity.

The human pulvinar is the largest thalamic area in terms of size and cortical connectivity. Although much is known about regional pulvinar structural anatomy, relatively little is known about pulvinar functional anatomy in humans. Cooccurrence of experimentally induced brain activity is a traditional metric used to establish interregional brain connectivity and forms the foundation of functional neuroimaging connectivity analyses.

In addition, cross-cultural support for the stability of those factors remains limited. Here, we examined the factor structure of the SPQ among British and Trinidadian adults.

Noninvasive markers of brain function could yield biomarkers in many neurological disorders. Disease models constrained by coordinate-based meta-analysis are likely to increase this yield. Here, we evaluate a thalamic model of temporal lobe epilepsy that we proposed in a coordinate-based meta-analysis and extended in a diffusion tractography study of an independent patient population.

Unexpected deaths and unplanned re-admissions in infants discharged home after cardiac surgery: a systematic review of potential risk factors.

Background: Babies with CHDs are a particularly vulnerable population with significant mortality in their 1st year. Although most deaths occur in the hospital within the early postoperative period, around one-fifth of postoperative deaths in the 1st year of life may occur after hospital discharge in infants who have undergone apparently successful cardiac surgery. Aim To systematically review the published literature and identify risk factors for adverse outcomes, specifically deaths and unplanned re-admissions, following hospital discharge after infant surgery for life-threatening CHDs.

Objective: To evaluate long-term performance of the aortic valve after an arterial switch operation (ASO), in terms of regurgitation and reoperation.

Methods: A longitudinal analysis of patients who underwent an ASO between 1988 and 1998 at the Birmingham Children's Hospital. Any type of aortic valve surgery after ASO was censored.
