Aim: Previous studies have demonstrated that contact lenses coated with the antimicrobial cationic peptide Mel4, a derivative of melimine, can reduce the occurrence of keratitis. However, the antimicrobial activity of Mel4 weakened over time due to its susceptibility to proteolytic degradation. Oligo-N-substituted glycine peptoids such as TM5 and TM18 possess antimicrobial properties and are resistant to proteolytic breakdown.

Early-onset pre-eclampsia is believed to arise from defective placentation in the first trimester, leading to placental ischaemia/reperfusion (I/R) and oxidative stress. However, our current understanding of the effects of I/R and oxidative stress on trophoblast function is ambiguous in part due to studies exposing trophoblasts to hypoxia instead of I/R, and which report conflicting results. Here, we present a model of simulated ischaemia/reperfusion (SI/R) to recapitulate the pathophysiological events of early-onset pre-eclampsia (PE), by exposing first trimester cytotrophoblast HTR-8/SVneo cells to a simulated ischaemia buffer followed by reperfusion.

The periodontal disease pathobiont () may exert a range of detrimental effects on periodontal diseases in general and, more specifically, with the initiation and progression of Localized Stage III Grade C periodontitis (molar-incisor pattern). In this review of the biogeography of this pathobiont, the full range of geographical scales for , from global origins and transmission to local geographical regions, to more locally exposed probands and families, to the individual host, down to the oral cavity, and finally, to spatial interactions with other commensals and pathobionts within the plaque biofilms at the micron/nanoscale, are reviewed. Using the newest technologies in genetics, imaging, in vitro cultures, and other research disciplines, investigators may be able to gain new insights to the role of this pathobiont in the unique initial destructive patterns of Localized Stage III Grade C periodontitis.

Lipid nanoparticle (LNP)/mRNA complexes have great therapeutic potential but their PEG chains can induce the production of anti-PEG antibodies. New LNPs that do not contain PEG are greatly needed. We demonstrate here that poly-glutamic acid-ethylene oxide graft copolymers can replace the PEG on LNPs and outperform PEG-LNPs after chronic administration.

Objectives:  The lack of feasible and meaningful measures of clinicians' behavior hinders efforts to assess and improve obesity management in pediatric primary care. In this study, we examined the external validity of a novel algorithm, previously validated in a single geographic region, using structured electronic health record (EHR) data to identify phenotypes of clinicians' attention to elevated body mass index (BMI) and weight-related comorbidities.

Aims: Myocardial response to stress echocardiography may be elicited physiologically, through exercise, or pharmacologically, often with dobutamine. Both have advantages but also limitations due to reduced exercise capacity or side-effects to stressor agent/lack of closeness to true pathophysiology of ischaemic cascade. We have combined low-dose dobutamine and exercise, creating a 'hybrid' protocol to utilize the advantages of both techniques and limit the drawbacks.

The translocator protein (TSPO) has been widely investigated as a PET-imaging biomarker of neuroinflammation and, more recently, as a therapeutic target for the treatment of neurodegenerative disease. TSPO ligands have been shown to exert neuroprotective effects in vivo and in vitro models of Alzheimer's disease (AD), by reducing toxic beta amyloid peptides, and attenuating brain atrophy. Recent transcriptomic and proteomic analyses, and the generation of TSPO-KO mice, have enabled new insights into the mechanistic function of TSPO in AD.

Pre-eclampsia (PE) is a hypertensive disorder of pregnancy which is associated with increased risk of neurodevelopmental disorders in exposed offspring. The pathophysiological mechanisms mediating this relationship are currently unknown, and one potential candidate is the anti-angiogenic factor soluble Fms-like tyrosine kinase 1 (sFlt-1), which is highly elevated in PE. While sFlt-1 can impair angiogenesis via inhibition of VEGFA signalling, it is unclear whether it can directly affect neuronal development independently of its effects on the vasculature.

New antiviral agents are essential to improving treatment and control of SARS-CoV-2 infections that can lead to the disease COVID-19. Antimicrobial peptoids are sequence-specific oligo--substituted glycine peptidomimetics that emulate the structure and function of natural antimicrobial peptides but are resistant to proteases. We demonstrate antiviral activity of a new peptoid (TM9) against the coronavirus, murine hepatitis virus (MHV), as a closely related model for the structure and antiviral susceptibility profile of SARS-CoV-2.

Microbial invasions underlie host-microbe interactions resulting in pathogenesis and probiotic colonization. In this study, we explore the effects of the microbiome on microbial invasion in Drosophila melanogaster. We demonstrate that gut microbes Lactiplantibacillus plantarum and Acetobacter tropicalis improve survival and lead to a reduction in microbial burden during infection.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is characterised by progressive loss of dopaminergic (DA) neurons from the substantia nigra (SN) and α-synuclein (αSyn) accumulation. Age is the biggest risk factor for PD and may create a vulnerable pre-parkinsonian state, but the drivers of this association are unclear.
