Reasons For Performing Study: Palmar/plantar osteochondral disease (POD) is a common, debilitating condition in Thoroughbred racehorses; however, training- and racing-related factors associated with this disease are unknown.
Objectives: To determine horse-, racing- and training-related risk factors for POD. The general hypotheses were that early training and racing, and increased intensity of racing and training, lead to increased severity of POD.
Unlabelled: The studies reported here were undertaken to define the regulation and functional importance of zinc-dependent histone deacetylase (Zn-HDAC) activity during liver regeneration using the mouse partial hepatectomy (PH) model. The results showed that hepatic HDAC activity was significantly increased in nuclear and cytoplasmic fractions following PH. Further analyses showed isoform-specific effects of PH on HDAC messenger RNA (mRNA) and protein expression, with increased expression of the class I HDACs, 1 and 8, and class II HDAC4 in regenerating liver.

Methods: We analyzed data from 52 prospective studies that included 246,669 participants without a history of cardiovascular disease to investigate the value of adding CRP or fibrinogen levels to conventional risk factors for the prediction of cardiovascular risk. We calculated measures of discrimination and reclassification during follow-up and modeled the clinical implications of initiation of statin therapy after the assessment of CRP or fibrinogen.
Background: Higher waist circumference and lower hip circumference are both associated with increased cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk, despite being directly correlated. The real effects of visceral obesity may therefore be underestimated when hip circumference is not fully taken into account. We hypothesized that adding waist and hip circumference to traditional risk factors would significantly improve CVD risk prediction.

We compared levels of biomarkers of vascular dysfunction in HIV-infected children (with and without hyperlipidaemia) with those in HIV-exposed, uninfected (HEU) children enrolled in the Pediatric HIV/AIDS Cohort Study (PHACS), and determined factors associated with these biomarkers.
Methods: A prospective cohort study was carried out.
Objectives: The aim of the study was to describe emtricitabine pharmacokinetics during pregnancy and postpartum.
Methods: The International Maternal Pediatric and Adolescent AIDS Clinical Trials (IMPAACT), formerly Pediatric AIDS Clinical Trials Group (PACTG), study P1026s is a prospective pharmacokinetic study of HIV-infected pregnant women taking antiretrovirals for clinical indications, including a cohort taking emtricitabine 200 mg once daily. Intensive steady-state 24-hour emtricitabine pharmacokinetic profiles were performed during the third trimester and 6-12 weeks postpartum, and on maternal and umbilical cord blood samples collected at delivery.
Objective: To test whether adding mobile application coaching and patient/provider web portals to community primary care compared with standard diabetes management would reduce glycated hemoglobin levels in patients with type 2 diabetes.
Research Design And Methods: A cluster-randomized clinical trial, the Mobile Diabetes Intervention Study, randomly assigned 26 primary care practices to one of three stepped treatment groups or a control group (usual care). A total of 163 patients were enrolled and included in analysis.
Guidelines suggest that all children with Down's syndrome have hearing testing on a regular basis. Since 2004, the ear, nose and throat (ENT), audiology and education services have conducted a joint clinic for annual ENT health and hearing surveillance of all preschool children with Down's syndrome in Greater Glasgow. The aim of this study is to report the prevalence of ENT problems in this well-defined birth cohort, and the proportion of children for whom ENT surgery is required.

A review of 117 locally followed pregnancies revealed 7 grade ≥ 3 AEs possibly related to antiretrovirals, including 2 hematologic, 3 hepatic, and 2 obstetric cholestasis cases. A fetal demise was attributed to obstetric cholestasis, but no maternal deaths occurred.

Research Design And Methods: This prospective cohort study in Tasmania, Australia, analyzed 458 adults with normal glucose tolerance and a mean (SD) age of 49.7 (12.
The fibroblast growth factor receptor 3 (Fgfr3) is expressed in a rostral(low) to caudal(high) gradient in the developing cerebral cortex. Therefore, we hypothesized that Fgfr3 contributes to the correct morphology and connectivity of the caudal cortex. Overall, the forebrain structures appeared normal in Fgfr3(-/-) mice.

With the use of tandem mass spectrometry, infants can now be identified and treated before a life threatening metabolic decompensation occurs. Newborn screening has also been shown to detect previously undiagnosed maternal inborn errors of metabolism.

Methods And Results: Twenty-four African Green monkeys (AGMs, Chlorocebus aethiops) were challenged via head-only aerosol inhalation with 3-145 (mean = 65) 50% lethal (LD(50)) doses of Y.
Background: Infection with human papillomavirus (HPV) and diseases caused by HPV are common in boys and men. We report on the safety of a quadrivalent vaccine (active against HPV types 6, 11, 16, and 18) and on its efficacy in preventing the development of external genital lesions and anogenital HPV infection in boys and men.
Methods: We enrolled 4065 healthy boys and men 16 to 26 years of age, from 18 countries in a randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind trial.
Objectives: To investigate the association between change in daily step count and both adiposity and insulin sensitivity and the extent to which the association between change in daily step count and insulin sensitivity may be mediated by adiposity.
Design: Population based cohort study.
Setting: Tasmania, Australia.
Background: We examined the baseline prevalence of penile, scrotal, perineal/perianal, and intra-anal human papillomavirus (HPV) infection in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-seronegative men who have sex with men (MSM).
Methods: Data were analyzed from 602 MSM aged 16-27 years with ≤ 5 lifetime sexual partners. Serum samples were tested for antibodies to HPV6/11/16/18.
Background: We examined the baseline prevalence of penile, scrotal, and perineal/perianal human papillomavirus (HPV) in heterosexual men (HM). We also evaluated baseline characteristics of HM to assess factors associated with prevalent HPV detection.
Methods: We tested serum samples from 3463 HM aged 16-24 years with 1-5 lifetime female sexual partners for antibodies to HPV 6, 11, 16, and 18.
Passive transfer models were developed to evaluate the ability of antibodies generated in cynomolgus macaques and humans vaccinated with a recombinant plague vaccine (rF1V) to protect naïve Swiss Webster mice against pneumonic plague. Development of the passive transfer model is intended to support clinical and nonclinical development of the rF1V vaccine. To evaluate protection, unfractionated serum collected from rF1V vaccinated cynomolgus macaques and human volunteers with known antibody titers to rF1, rV and rF1V was transferred into naïve Swiss Webster mice via the intraperitoneal route.
