is a Gram-negative, curved, rod-shaped organism that can cause sepsis due to either gastroenteritis when ingested (usually via raw oysters) or skin infections when introduced into cuts or abrasions. Found in estuarine waters (coastal waters where fresh water from streams mixes with salt water from the ocean resulting in water of intermediate salinity (i.e.

Owing to perceived additional costs, patients may avoid integrative health and medicine (IHM) treatments, while insurers may not cover IHM. We hypothesized that adult beneficiaries of a health system's employee insurance plan with musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions receiving covered outpatient IHM would have reduced total allowed costs over the 1-year follow-up compared with matched controls, secondarily exploring medical and pharmaceutical cost subsets. We queried medical records and claims spanning 2018-2023 for beneficiaries aged 18-89 years with a new MSK episode.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to understand the transmission of Streptococcus A (Strep A) in a controlled environment through the Controlled Human Infection with Penicillin for (CHIPS) trial, where participants were intentionally infected with the emm75 strain.
  • - Researchers used three methods to investigate transmission: agar settle plates for droplet or airborne spread, measuring how far droplets travel during conversation, and swabbing high-contact surfaces for the presence of Strep A.
  • - Out of 60 participants in the CHIPS trial, only one instance of droplet transmission was detected, with no evidence of airborne spread or contamination on surfaces, suggesting minimal transmission in this controlled setting but highlighting the need for further research in real-world conditions.

Background: Youth obesity and depression are public health concerns. Although meta-analyses suggest a positive association between those conditions in adults and adolescents, evidence remains unclear in prepubertal children. We examined the bidirectional associations between levels of depressive symptoms and weight status in 8-10-year-old children with a parental history of obesity, over two years, and whether they differ by sex.

Objectives: Early prevention strategies are needed to mitigate the high risk of cardiovascular disease in adolescents with type 1 diabetes (T1D). Residential neighbourhood features can promote healthy lifestyle behaviours and reduce cardiovascular risk, but less is known about their role in lifestyle behaviours in adolescents with T1D, and no studies used comparisons to healthy controls.

Methods: We examined associations between residential neighbourhood features and lifestyle behaviours in adolescents with T1D and healthy controls.

Background And Aim: Globally, harmful substance use is among the leading causes of premature deaths in the general population, and most of these behaviours are initiated during pre-adolescence to young adulthood. Preventing the onset or reducing the prevalence of substance use among young people is thus a global health priority. Diverse school-based interventions have been implemented in low-and-middle-income countries (LMICs); however, evidence regarding their theoretical underpinnings and core components is lacking.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is common, costly, and life-limiting, requiring dialysis and transplantation in advanced stages. Although effective guideline-based therapy exists, the asymptomatic nature of CKD together with low health literacy, adverse social determinants of health, unmet behavioral health needs, and primary care providers' (PCP) limited understanding of CKD result in defects in screening and diagnosis. Care is fragmented between PCPs and specialty nephrologists, with limited time, expertise, and resources to address systemic gaps.

Among genes present in all group A streptococci (GAS), those encoding M-fibril and T-pilus proteins display the highest levels of sequence diversity, giving rise to the two primary serological typing schemes historically used to define strain. A new genotyping scheme for the pilin adhesin and backbone genes is developed and, when combined with typing, provides an account of the global GAS strain population. Cluster analysis based on nucleotide sequence similarity assigns most T-serotypes to discrete pilin backbone sequence clusters, yet the established T-types correspond to only half the clusters.

The rapid intensification of poultry production raises important concerns about the associated risks of zoonotic infections. Here, we introduce EPINEST (EPIdemic NEtwork Simulation in poultry Transportation systems): an agent-based modelling framework designed to simulate pathogen transmission within realistic poultry production and distribution networks. We provide example applications to broiler production in Bangladesh, but the modular structure of the model allows for easy parameterization to suit specific countries and system configurations.
