Background: The interaction between cancer cells and cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) is a key determinant of the rapid progression, high invasiveness, and chemoresistance of aggressive desmoplastic cancers such as pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). Tumor cells are known to reprogram fibroblasts into CAFs by secreting transforming growth factor beta (TGF-β), amongst other cytokines. In turn, CAFs produce soluble factors that promote tumor-cell invasiveness and chemoresistance, including TGF-β itself, which has a major role in myofibroblastic CAFs.

Our narrative review aimed to assess the clinical effects of proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9) inhibitors on coronary plaque characteristics specifically focusing from atheroma progression to regression and stabilization.

According to current guidelines, only clinical surveillance is recommended for patients with moderate aortic valve stenosis (AS), while aortic valve replacement may be considered in patients undergoing surgery for other indications. Recent studies have shown that moderate AS is associated with a high risk of adverse cardiovascular events, including death, especially in patients with left ventricular dysfunction. Geopolymers are amorphous aluminosilicate inorganic polymers synthesized by alkaline activation characterized by a lower carbon footprint, greater durability, and excellent mechanical properties compared to traditional concrete, making them promising building materials for sustainable construction. To develop sustainable lightweight geopolymer-based building materials useful as fire resistant thermal insulation materials, we added 5 and 10 wt% of discarded cork dust, a readily available industrial by-product, to metakaolin before and after the alkaline activation with sodium hydroxide 8 M and sodium silicate solutions. We followed the chemical, microstructural, antibacterial, and physical properties of the resulting composites for up to 90 days in order to monitor their long-term durability.

Background: Unplanned 30-day readmissions after surgery are a source of patient dissatisfaction, monitored by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, have financial penalties for hospitals, and are publicly reported. Neurosurgical operations have a higher 30-day unplanned readmission rate after the index discharge than other specialties. After a simple initiative for a 48-72-hour postdischarge telephone call, there was an observed significant decrease in readmission rates from 17% to 8% in 7 months at Thomas Jefferson University.
