The occurrence, diversity, and pathogenicity of Vibrio spp. were investigated in two estuaries along the Italian Adriatic coast. Vibrio alginolyticus was the predominant species, followed by Vibrio parahaemolyticus, non-O1 Vibrio cholerae, and Vibrio vulnificus.

Predictive factors of histological response to primary chemotherapy in Ewing's sarcoma.

Clinicopathologic variables associated with a good histological response to primary chemotherapy in Ewing's sarcoma are identified. The histological response to preoperative chemotherapy in 243 cases of Ewing's sarcoma treated with neoadjuvant chemotherapy was analyzed in relation to different clinicopathological features (sex and age of the patients, tumor size, serum lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) levels, tumor site) and to the type and schedule of anticancer drugs delivered preoperatively according to three consecutive chemotherapy regimens. A higher rate of good responses was achieved with the use of ifosfamide and dactinomycin in addition to a conventional three-drug VAC regimen, suggesting that these drugs should be included from the beginning in neoadjuvant regimens for the treatment of Ewing's sarcoma.

ABVD and radiation therapy as first-line treatment in advanced Hodgkin's disease.

A total of 208 strains of Aeromonas were isolated by monthly sampling from two estuaries (one provided with, and the other devoid of a waste-water treatment system) on the Italian coast of the Adriatic sea between September 1994 and August 1995. Biotyping at the species level allowed the identification of 96 strains (46%) as Aer. caviae, 46 (22%) as Aer.

Radiotherapy in vertebral tumors. Indications and limits: a report on 28 cases of Ewing's sarcoma of the spine.

After brief notes on techniques used to radiate the spine, its indications and the limits of doses required by its adjacency to the spinal cord, our experience in the treatment of 28 patients with a diagnosis of Ewing's sarcoma localized in the spine, not metastatic at onset, that came to our observation between 1980 and 1994 is reported. All of the patients were treated by chemotherapy. As for local treatment radiotherapy was performed in all of the cases, in 50% of cases it was associated with surgery (6 laminectomies, 6 excisions, and 2 vertebrectomies).

Non conventional fractionation in radiotherapy of the musculo-skeletal sarcomas.

In 1989 we started an accelerated hyperfractionated schedule of radiotherapy (two 1.6 Gy daily fractions) in standard risk localized Ewing's sarcoma of bone, with the aim at reducing late effects in young patients and at improving disease control through a better integration of treatment modalities. From 1991, the same schedule was used in preoperative radiotherapy of adult soft tissue sarcomas of the extremities: the main purpose was to reduce the time to surgery and to evaluate surgical complications in comparison with a previous experience of hypofractionated radiotherapy (one 3 Gy daily fraction).

The long-term results obtained in 252 patients with non-metastatic Ewing's sarcoma of bone treated between March 1972 and June 1988 according to three sequential protocols of treatment were evaluated. Primary tumor was treated with radiotherapy in 125 cases, with surgery in 52 and with surgical resection followed by radiotherapy in 75. In the first protocol (REA 1; 1972-78) chemotherapy was performed with a 3-drug regimen (VCR, CPM, ADM), whereas in the REA 2 protocol (1979-82) and in the REN 1 protocol (1983-88) a 4-drug regimen was used (VCR, CPM, ADM, ACTD).

Background: During the last 20 years Hodgkin's disease (HD) has become one of the most curable neoplasms; in fact, more than 75-80% of patients are expected to achieve long-term relapse-free survival with appropriate therapy. However, overall survival has been affected by intercurrent or treatment-induced diseases such as the increased risk of cardiac toxicity in patients who received mediastinal irradiation.

Methods: The incidence of cardiac abnormalities after mediastinal radiotherapy was assessed in 102 consecutive HD patients who underwent this treatment from January 1970 to December 1980.
