The occurrence, diversity, and pathogenicity of Vibrio spp. were investigated in two estuaries along the Italian Adriatic coast. Vibrio alginolyticus was the predominant species, followed by Vibrio parahaemolyticus, non-O1 Vibrio cholerae, and Vibrio vulnificus.

The histological response to preoperative chemotherapy in 243 cases of Ewing's sarcoma treated with neoadjuvant chemotherapy was analyzed in relation to different clinicopathological features (sex and age of the patients, tumor size, serum lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) levels, tumor site) and to the type and schedule of anticancer drugs delivered preoperatively according to three consecutive chemotherapy regimens. A higher rate of good responses was achieved with the use of ifosfamide and dactinomycin in addition to a conventional three-drug VAC regimen, suggesting that these drugs should be included from the beginning in neoadjuvant regimens for the treatment of Ewing's sarcoma.

In addition, to evaluate whether patients with slow responding tumors could profit from the early change of treatment regimen [MOPP (mechloretamine, vincristine, procarbazine, and prednisone)] followed by radiation therapy or autologous bone marrow transplantation (ABMT). Finally, to evaluate treatment options for patients with both early and late relapses.

The purpose of this paper is to report the results achieved in a neoadjuvant protocol (REN-3) in which ifosfamide, added to the conventional VACA regimen, was employed since the induction phase. Induction chemotherapy consisted of vincristine, cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, actinomycin-D and ifosfamide.

The main goal of the VETERAN project is the tuning and testing of different virtual environments, designed to address the cognitive/functional impairments that may occur due to the aging process and age-related disorders. In particular the developed modules will address the problems commonly found in the following pathologies that have a strong impact on the elderly health care policy: Alzheimer's disease and other senile dementias; stroke and unilateral spatial neglect; mobility-related accidents within specific environments (e.

Biotyping at the species level allowed the identification of 96 strains (46%) as Aer. caviae, 46 (22%) as Aer.

All of the patients were treated by chemotherapy. As for local treatment radiotherapy was performed in all of the cases, in 50% of cases it was associated with surgery (6 laminectomies, 6 excisions, and 2 vertebrectomies).

Of these, SDS has been largely employed as a reference substance in toxicity tests with aquatic organisms. Studies on the effect of this substance on the physiology and behavior of fish are scanty.

From 1991, the same schedule was used in preoperative radiotherapy of adult soft tissue sarcomas of the extremities: the main purpose was to reduce the time to surgery and to evaluate surgical complications in comparison with a previous experience of hypofractionated radiotherapy (one 3 Gy daily fraction).

The purpose of this article is to report the results achieved in a new neoadjuvant protocol in which IF and ET were added to the conventional VACA regimen and administered to patients with localized disease.
Methods: In this study, eighty-two patients were treated between May 1988 and October 1991.
The long-term results obtained in 252 patients with non-metastatic Ewing's sarcoma of bone treated between March 1972 and June 1988 according to three sequential protocols of treatment were evaluated. Primary tumor was treated with radiotherapy in 125 cases, with surgery in 52 and with surgical resection followed by radiotherapy in 75. In the first protocol (REA 1; 1972-78) chemotherapy was performed with a 3-drug regimen (VCR, CPM, ADM), whereas in the REA 2 protocol (1979-82) and in the REN 1 protocol (1983-88) a 4-drug regimen was used (VCR, CPM, ADM, ACTD).

Patients And Methods: The response to chemotherapy was evaluated from the specimens of 118 Ewing's sarcoma patients, who were preoperatively treated by chemotherapy alone. Responses were graded I to III (macroscopic viable tumor, microscopic viable tumor, and no viable tumor cells, respectively).
Prostaglandin E1 improves hemodynamics in patients with severe dilated cardiomyopathy and pulmonary hypertension through it's reducing action on pulmonary resistances. However, few data are available to indicate whether these beneficial effects on right heart hemodynamics translate into any improvement of the altered left ventricular filling pattern that characterizes this condition. We studied 12 patients with dilated cardiomyopathy during preoperative evaluation for cardiac transplantation before and after prostaglandin E1, 30-50 ng/kg/min i.

Conventional diagnostic radiology and computed tomography (CT) are generally unable to detect the differences between tumor tissue and fibrosis. Gallium-67-citrate (67Ga) SPECT and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can potentially differentiate residual active tumor tissue and fibrosis.

Its role however has recently been criticized, mainly due to the high incidence of late complications in irradiated tissues. Furthermore, surgical staging, which in the opinion of many is mandatory for proper selection of patients for radiotherapy alone, has a well-known morbidity, and splenectomy has been associated with a high risk of secondary leukemias.

However, overall survival has been affected by intercurrent or treatment-induced diseases such as the increased risk of cardiac toxicity in patients who received mediastinal irradiation.
Methods: The incidence of cardiac abnormalities after mediastinal radiotherapy was assessed in 102 consecutive HD patients who underwent this treatment from January 1970 to December 1980.
From January 1988 to October 1991, one hundred and twelve patients with non metastatic Ewing's sarcoma of bone were treated with a 6 drugs neoadjuvant chemotherapy protocol (IOR/Ew2) in which, to the four drugs usually used in the treatment of this tumor (vincristine, adriamycin, cyclophosphamide and dactinomycin), Ifosfamide and VP-16 were added. The local treatment consisted of radiation therapy in 52 cases, a surgical treatment was performed in 27 cases and in the remaining 33 cases both the previous treatments were used. At a mean follow-up of 4.
