The authors report ten cases of small bowel diverticulosis revealed by a complication in four cases. Aetiologic, pathological, clinical and therapeutic characteristics of this rare disease are reviewed. Main complications are perforations, intestinal obstruction and hemorrhage.

Pinaverium bromide is a specific calcium channel blocker used in the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) for its spasmolytic activity. Internal ribosome-binding site directs expression of parathyroid hormone analogue (8-84) in Escherichia coli.

Expression of the human parathyroid hormone (PTH) gene in E. coli yielded intact PTH and PTH-(8-84). To determine if PTH-(8-84) is the result of a competing translation initiated from methionine codon-8 or degradation of the intact PTH, twelve new gene constructs with or without an internal ribosome-binding site (iRBS) in the PTH-(1-5) region were prepared via substitution with degenerate codons.

Remote arteriovenous fistula with infrapopliteal polytetrafluoroethylene bypass for critical ischemia.

Between January 1985 and January 1989, 13 patients underwent femorotibial bypass using a polytetrafluoroethylene graft with a remote distal arteriovenous fistula. Specific degenerate codons in the amino-terminal region of a synthetic human parathyroid hormone (PTH) gene exerted dramatic effects on both products and yield of expression of this 84-amino acid polypeptide in Escherichia coli. With adenine-rich degenerate codons constituting the PTH-(1-5) region, intact PTH has been expressed as the only PTH product at 6.5 mg/liter.

Kinetics and specificities of two closely related beta-glucosidases secreted by Schizophyllum commune.

Two beta-glucosidases (I and II) were isolated from Schizophyllum commune, and their physical and chemical properties studied. The two enzymes have very similar sequences, as shown by HPLC analysis of tryptic digests and partial amino acid sequencing. As judged by their circular dichroism spectra, they have almost identical secondary structure.

[Abdominal aortic aneurysm detected by a consumption coagulopathy].

[Intestinal perforation occurring at the beginning of treatment: a severe complication of bacillary tuberculosis].

We report 2 cases of intestinal perforation caused by tuberculosis and affecting the small intestine in one case and the colon in the other case. The patients were men aged 49 and 51 years respectively. Both were cachectic and presented with advanced open pulmonary tuberculosis.

Cooper ligament repair: an update.

This study had 4 objectives: first, to define the place of the Cooper ligament in hernial repairs by recalling its anatomic importance within the inguinal region; second, to describe our technique using the Cooper ligament, a technique based on suture of the conjoined tendon to the Cooper ligament without a relaxing incision into the rectus sheath and also to describe other authors' variants; third, to report the results obtained for 1,040 patients operated on by our technique from 1970 to 1978; fourth, to define the value and limits of these herniorrhaphy methods in repairs of groin hernias. These methods are inexpensive and virtually exclude the risk of serious infections because no foreign material is used. The procedures can be used in most patients.

[Effect of a buzepide metiodide-haloperidol combination in treating functional intestinal disorders. Randomized double-blind controlled versus placebo study].

The efficacy and safety of a combination of buzepide metiodide and haloperidol was assessed in a placebo-controlled double-blind trial during 2 months in 224 patients (154 women, 79 men) with the irritable bowel syndrome. The 2 groups were comparable at inclusion. The efficacy was assessed at days 15, 30 and 60.

[Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy. Indications and results in 31 patients].

[A case of parathyroid adenoma localized in the middle mediastinum].

The discovery of a parathyroid adenoma in the middle mediastinum is exceptional and fewer than 10 cases have been reported. On the basis of a new case, the authors propose several pathogenic hypotheses: this adenoma develops and/or migrates from the fourth branchial pouch. Preoperative imaging is very useful for guiding the operation via sternotomy.
