Photocatalytic nitrogen fixation from N provides an alternative strategy for ammonia (NH) production, but it was limited by the consumption of a sacrificial electron donor for the currently reported half-reaction system. Here, we use naturally abundant and renewable cellulose as the sacrificial reagent for photocatalytic nitrogen fixation over oxygen-vacancy-modified MoO nanosheets as the photocatalyst. In this smartly designed photocatalytic system, the photooxidation of cellulose not only generates value-added chemicals but also provides electrons for the N reduction reaction and results in the production of NH with a maximum rate of 68 μmol·h·g.

Tumor immunotherapy is a promising approach for addressing the limitations of conventional tumor treatments, such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy, which often have side effects and fail to prevent recurrence and metastasis. However, the effectiveness and sustainability of immune activation in tumor immunotherapy remain challenging. Tumor immunogenic cell death, characterized by the release of immunogenic substances, damage associated molecular patterns (DAMPs), and tumor associated antigens, from dying tumor cells (DTCs), offers a potential solution.

Ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury, a multifaceted pathological process, occurs when the prolongation of reperfusion duration triggers ferroptosis-mediated myocardial damage. Isoliquiritigenin (ISL), a single flavonoid from licorice, exhibits a wide range of pharmacological impacts, but its function in ferroptosis caused by myocardial I/R injury remains unclear. This study delved into the protective effect of ISL on myocardial I/R injury-induced ferroptosis and its mechanism.

Recently, the increase in marine temperatures has become an important global marine environmental issue. The ability of energy supply in marine animals plays a crucial role in avoiding the stress of elevated temperatures. The investigation into anaerobic metabolism, an essential mechanism for regulating energy provision under heat stress, is limited in mollusks.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated the link between prior BCG treatments for bladder cancer and COVID-19 infection severity.
  • Researchers analyzed data from 348 patients with high-risk bladder cancer from two Canadian centers to track COVID-19 outcomes.
  • Findings showed that neither intravesical BCG nor infantile BCG vaccination had a significant impact on the incidence of COVID-19 among these patients.

Depth images and thermal images contain the spatial geometry information and surface temperature information, which can act as complementary information for the RGB modality. However, the quality of the depth and thermal images is often unreliable in some challenging scenarios, which will result in the performance degradation of the two-modal based salient object detection (SOD). Meanwhile, some researchers pay attention to the triple-modal SOD task, namely the visible-depth-thermal (VDT) SOD, where they attempt to explore the complementarity of the RGB image, the depth image, and the thermal image.

Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness, safety, and convenience of in-class transition (iCT) from intravenous bortezomib-based induction to ixazomib-based oral regimens.

Methods: This retrospective real-world study was conducted in 16 Chinese hospitals between October 2017 and April 2023 and analyzed newly diagnosed (NDMM) and first-line relapsed multiple myeloma (FRMM) patients who attained at least a partial response from bortezomib-based induction therapy, followed by an ixazomib-based oral regimen for 2 year or until disease progression or intolerable toxicity.

Results: The study enrolled 199 patients, median age: 63 years old, male 55.

Background: A common treatment strategy for individuals with multifocal hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) who are not candidates for surgical resection is transarterial chemoembolization (TACE). Combining TACE with I seed insertion (ISI) may offer a means of enhancing therapeutic efficacy. The purpose of this study was to compare the therapeutic efficacy of TACE administered with and without ISI for the treatment of multifocal HCC.

Objective: Mutations in presenilin genes are the major cause of Alzheimer's disease. However, little is known about their expression and function in the gut. In this study, we identify the presenilins Psen1 and Psen2 as key molecules that maintain intestinal homoeostasis.

Background: Immunogenic cell death (ICD) is a crucial mechanism for triggering the adaptive immune response in cancer patients. Damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs) are critical factors in the detection of ICD. Chemotherapeutic drugs can cause ICD and the release of DAMPs.

PANoptosis is a type of programmed cell death (PCD) characterised by apoptosis, necroptosis and pyroptosis. Long non-coding ribonucleic acids (lncRNAs) are participating in the malignant behaviour of tumours regulated by PCD. Nevertheless, the function of PANoptosis-associated lncRNAs in lung adenocarcinoma remains to be investigated.

Ischemic stroke (IS), primarily caused by cerebrovascular obstruction, results in severe neurological deficits and has emerged as a leading cause of death and disability worldwide. Recently, there has been increasing exploration of the neuroprotective properties of the inert gas argon. Argon has exhibited impressive neuroprotection in many in vivo and ex vivo experiments without signs of adverse effects, coupled with the advantages of being inexpensive and easily available.

Spider silk exhibits an excellent combination of high strength and toughness, which originates from the hierarchical self-assembled structure of spidroin during fiber spinning. In this work, superfine nanofibrils are established in polyelectrolyte artificial spider silk by optimizing the flexibility of polymer chains, which exhibits combination of breaking strength and toughness ranging from 1.83 GPa and 238 MJ m to 0.

Article Synopsis
  • Human β-defensin-1 (hBD-1) may help the immune system fight colorectal cancer by influencing the mTOR pathway and promoting autophagy in colon cancer cells (SW620).
  • In experiments, hBD-1 reduced the growth of SW620 cells and showed a decrease in mTOR activity while increasing proteins associated with autophagy (Beclin1 and LC3II/I).
  • Bioinformatics analysis identified seven lncRNAs linked to the mTOR pathway, with TCONS_00014506 being particularly important; inhibiting this lncRNA further enhanced hBD-1's effects on mTOR and autophagy.

Anaplastic thyroid carcinoma (ATC) is the most aggressive subtype of thyroid cancer with few effective therapies. Though immunotherapies such as targeting PD-1/PD-L1 axis have benefited patients with solid tumor, the druggable immune checkpoints are quite limited in ATC. In our study, we focused on the anti-tumor potential of sialic acid-binding Ig-like lectins (Siglecs) in ATC.

Objective: To investigate the relationship between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) level with novel inflammatory markers in hemodialysis-treated patients.

Methods: A total of 167 maintenance hemodialysis-treated patients were enrolled in this cross-sectional study. The patients were divided into vitamin D deficiency (a serum 25(OH)D level <20 ng/mL) and nondeficiency (a serum 25(OH)D level ≥20 ng/mL) groups.

Se-based cathodes have caught tremendous attention owing to their comparable volumetric capacity and better electronic conductivity to S cathodes. However, its low utilization ratio and sluggish redox kinetics due to the high reaction barrier of solid-phase transformation from Se to LiSe limit its practical application. Herein, an in-situ texturing hollow carbon host by gas-solid interface reaction anchored with Fe single-atomic catalyst is designed and prepared for advanced Li-Se batteries.

Osteoporosis is particularly prevalent among postmenopausal women and the elderly. In the present study, we investigated the effect of the novel small molecule E0924G (N-(4-methoxy-pyridine-2-yl)-5-methylfuran-2-formamide) on osteoporosis. E0924G significantly increased the protein expression levels of osteoprotegerin (OPG) and runt-related transcription factor 2 (RUNX2), and thus significantly promoted osteogenesis in MC3T3-E1 cells.
