Abiotic and biotic factors control ecosystem biodiversity, but their relative contributions remain unclear. The ultraoligotrophic ecosystem of the Antarctic Dry Valleys, a simple yet highly heterogeneous ecosystem, is a natural laboratory well-suited for resolving the abiotic and biotic controls of community structure. Unprecedented internal migration to urban areas has happened in China over the last few decades. While, we know that migration has a bidirectional relationship with health, this relationship has only been studied to a limited extent in China. In particular, the exiting literature has neglected the effects of migration on health and well-being in later life, instead focusing on the relationship between these outcomes over the short term, and also have only focused on temporary rural-to-urban migrants with a rural hukou rather than the broader range of internal migration flows.

The influence of Val158Met COMT on physiological stress responsivity.

We tested the extent to which the catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) Val158Met polymorphism is associated with stress response and pain in both men and women. The participants were assessed on measures of perceived pain and state/trait anxiety in association with their COMT allele status. We also measured cortisol and salivary alpha-amylase (sAA) levels since previous research suggests an association between the COMT Val159Met polymorphism, cortisol secretion, and sAA activity.

The use of indicator species to test for environmental stability and functioning is a widespread practice. In aquatic systems, several daphniids (Cladocera: Daphniidae) are commonly used as indicator species; registration of new pesticides are mandated by the Environmental Protection Agency to be accompanied by daphniid toxicity data. This reliance upon a few species to infer ecosystem health and function assumes similar responses to toxicants across species with potentially very different life histories and susceptibility.

Risk Factors for Surgical Site Infection in Minor Dermatological Surgery: A Systematic Review.

Objective: To identify patient- and procedure-related risk factors for surgical site infection following minor dermatological surgery.

Data Sources: The MEDLINE, Cumulative Index of Nursing and Allied Health Literature, Informit, and Scopus databases were searched for relevant literature on patient populations receiving minor surgery, where risk factors for surgical site infection were explicitly stated.

Study Selection: Studies involving major dermatological surgery were excluded.

Objectives: Early warning scores were developed to improve recognition of clinical deterioration in acute hospital settings. In England, the National Early Warning Score (NEWS) is increasingly being recommended at a national level for use outside such settings. Detection of non-notifiable H4N6 avian influenza virus in poultry in Great Britain.

A 12-month pilot project for notifiable avian disease (NAD) exclusion testing in chicken and turkey flocks in Great Britain (GB) offered, in partnership with industry, opportunities to carry out differential diagnosis in flocks where NAD was not suspected, and to identify undetected or undiagnosed infections. In May 2014, clinical samples received from a broiler breeder chicken premises that had been experiencing health and production problems for approximately one week tested positive by avian influenza (AI) real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RRT-PCR). Following immediate escalation to an official, statutory investigation to rule out the presence of notifiable AI virus (AIV; H5 or H7 subtypes), a non-notifiable H4N6 low pathogenicity (LP) AIV was detected through virus isolation in embryonated specific pathogen free (SPF) fowls' eggs, neuraminidase inhibition test, cleavage site sequencing and AIV subtype H4-specific serology.

Rationale: Mental and behavioral health recovery includes concepts related not just to symptom improvement, but also to participating in activities that contribute to wellness and a meaningful life. Video game play can relieve stress and provide a way to connect, which may be especially important for military veterans.

Objective: We examined how military veterans used video game play to further their mental and behavioral health recovery by conducting an exploratory thematic analysis of the gaming habits of 20 United States military veterans who were in treatment for mental or behavioral health problems.

A review of the literature was undertaken as the foundation for developing an assessment tool for Blacks/African Americans, other racial/ethnic minorities, and low-income students attending historically Black colleges and universities. Findings revealed a variety of academic and nonacademic indicators were used to evaluate likelihood of success. Course specific grades, grade point average (GPA), standardized comprehensive exams and standardized course specific exams were the most commonly used predictor variables that showed significant outcomes.

The test primers target sequences in the in situ hybridisation probes identified to bind specifically to APX 18S rRNA and amplify a 723 bp DNA product. The test did not amplify 18S rRNA gene sequences of other apicomplexan species, including Toxoplasma gondii, Neospora caninum, Selenidium spp.

Evaluation of Clinical Prognostic Factors and Further Delineation of the Effect of Mesenteric Fibrosis on Survival in Advanced Midgut Neuroendocrine Tumours.

Background: Small intestinal neuroendocrine tumours (SI NETs) represent 30-50% of small bowel neoplasms and often present at an advanced stage. To date, there is relatively limited literature regarding prognostic factors affecting overall survival (OS) in stage IV disease. In addition, the prevalence of mesenteric fibrosis (MF) in SI NETs and its effect on OS have not been sufficiently explored in the literature.

Sex Determination in Is Accompanied by Transcriptome Changes That Drive Epigenetic Reprogramming of the Young Gametophyte.

The fern is an important model for studies of sex determination and gamete differentiation in homosporous plants. Here we use RNA-seq to assemble a transcriptome and identify genes differentially expressed in young gametophytes as their sex is determined by the presence or absence of the male-inducing pheromone called antheridiogen. Of the 1,163 consensus differentially expressed genes identified, the vast majority (1,030) are up-regulated in gametophytes treated with antheridiogen.

From theory to experimental design-Quantifying a trait-based theory of predator-prey dynamics.

Successfully applying theoretical models to natural communities and predicting ecosystem behavior under changing conditions is the backbone of predictive ecology. However, the experiments required to test these models are dictated by practical constraints, and models are often opportunistically validated against data for which they were never intended. Alternatively, we can inform and improve experimental design by an in-depth pre-experimental analysis of the model, generating experiments better targeted at testing the validity of a theory.
