Background/objectives: Magnesium plays a crucial role in immune function, influencing immunoglobulin synthesis, antibody-dependent cytolysis, and other immune processes. In renal transplant patients, magnesium deficiency is primarily induced by calcineurin inhibitor treatment, through the reduction of magnesium transporter proteins in the renal tubules, leading to magnesium loss.

Methods: To assess the correlation between serum magnesium levels and the long-term outcomes of renal graft and transplant recipients, we conducted a retrospective study on 87 patients who have had a transplant for more than 5 years, a period considered immunologically stable.

Infective spondylodiscitis (ISD), the infection of vertebral bodies and surrounding tissues, is a rare complication with major impact on the long-term survival of hemodialysis (HD) patients. Although the most frequent etiology is , identifying these pathogens in blood cultures and biopsy cultures is often difficult. This paper aims to present suitable antibiotic combinations for the treatment of these patients, which is usually challenging in the case of an unidentified pathogen.

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have been generally used due to their strong antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal and antimicrobial properties. However, their toxicity is a subject of sustained debate, thus requiring further studies. Hence, this study examines the adverse effects of the sub-dermal administered dose of AgNPs (200 nm) on the liver, kidney and heart of male Wistar rats.

There is no systematic geriatric supply service and active geriatric wards are very rarely found in Hungary. That is why these wards need to be established in every leading county hospital as a regional system. The reasons for this lack are that active geriatric wards do not exist in the financing agreements, and, on the other hand, there is no sufficient number of geriatric specialists to fulfil the minimum personal conditions of a geriatric ward.

In the literature, this paper is the first to describe the use of plasma rich in growth factors (PRGF)-Endoret® in hemodialyzed diabetic patients, to promote the healing of after amputation wounds. The PRGF-Endoret® was primarily conceived to be used in maxillofacial surgery, oral implantology, etc., the innovation residing in the blood collection technique (quantity, moment of the week, rhythmicity), which was adapted to the specific conditions of the hemodialyzed patient.

Article Synopsis
  • * The study involved two large Phase 3 clinical trials focusing on patients with low hemoglobin levels; the main goal was to assess the safety of vadadustat compared to darbepoetin, specifically looking at major cardiovascular events.
  • * Results showed that vadadustat did not meet the safety benchmark compared to darbepoetin, as indicated by a higher hazard ratio for major adverse cardiovascular events, and there was minimal difference in hemoglobin improvement between the two treatments.

High altitude aerial surveys have the potential to improve disturbance-free data collection in wildlife research, but previously, bird species were not recognizable in high-altitude orthophotos. This method of aerial surveying is effective and can be repeated frequently due to its low cost; it also has the additional advantage of being able to monitor the status of protected areas. In the case of waterbirds, due to the low vegetation coverage, aerial remote sensing is an exceptionally effective technique for surveying populations and detecting nests.

Remote sensing is a method that collects data of the Earth's surface without causing disturbances. Thus, it is worthwhile to use remote sensing methods to survey endangered ecosystems, as the studied species will behave naturally while undisturbed. The latest passive optical remote sensing solutions permit surveys from long distances.

Paraneoplastic symptoms, caused by a malignancy, but not directly related to invasion by the tumor or its metastases, are the result of a wide variety of tumor-derived biologic mediators like hormones, peptides, antibodies, cytotoxic lymphocytes, autocrine and paracrine mediators. Systemic inflammatory rheumatic diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, scleroderma or dermatomyositis, may increase the risk for the development of malignancies, predominantly lymphoproliferative disorders. Immunosuppressive drugs and biological agents may also be carcinogenic.

Background: Cephalo pelvic disproportion is still the leading indication for caesarean section in many developing countries and the contribution of pelvic typology may play some role in this regard. Our objective is to determine the proportion of pelvic types as seen in a tropical setting.

Method: A retrospective review of preliminary films of hysterosalpingography of 400 women who underwent the study between January 2000 and December 2007 was reviewed to determine the pelvic typology.

During the follow-up of thyroid function of 151 patients with Hodgkin's disease in complete remission for at least 1 year, 26 cases of subclinical, 12 cases of manifest clinical hypothyroidism and 2 cases of hyperthyroidism (Graves-Basedow disease) were confirmed. Thyroid dysfunction was more frequent in patients who had undergone mantle or neck radiotherapy. Hypothyroidism was most often revealed from the 6th year on following radiotherapy.

The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of heat shock (HS) treatment and geldanamycin (GA) on the release of arachidonic acid (AA) from human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC), monocytes and lymphocytes. Mononuclear cells prepared from blood of healthy subjects were preincubated with (3)H-AA. The release of (3)H-AA incorporated into the membrane was studied after pretreatment of cells by HS (43 degrees C, 1 h) and GA.

1. In the patient with renal insufficiency before dialysis, the phosphocalcic disorders appear insidiously. They are dominated by hyperparathyroidism which will be diagnosed on the initially yearly determination of plasma intact PTH as soon as creatinine clearance decreases below 60 ml/min, eventhough there is still no modification in plasma concentrations of calcium and phosphate.

Objective: We compared different signal transduction pathways through thyroid stimulating hormone receptor (TSH-R) in porcine thyroid cells (PTC) following stimulation with thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) and 11 thyroid stimulating immunoglobulin samples (TSI) obtained from patients with Graves' disease.

Design: Following stimulation with TSI, the level of inositol trisphosphate (IP3) and [Ca2+]i, as well as the membrane bound protein kinase C (PKC) activity and the intensity of the arachidonic acid (AA) cascade, were determined in PTC.

Results: Seven out of eleven TSI samples activated PTC through IP3 generation, elevated [Ca2+]i from the intracellular pools, exhibited verapamil-insensitive membrane-bound PKC activation, and enhanced release of [14C]AA derivates (however, one of the samples was also able to take up Ca2+ from the extracellular space).

The source of TSH-receptor antibodies (TRAb) in Basedow's-Graves' disease is still under debate. Previous studies by other groups had found TRAb levels in the thyroid vein higher than or equal to that in the peripheral vein. The aim of the present work was to investigate the suspected presence of this TRAb gradient in 14 Graves' patients who underwent surgery.

Twelve patients with Graves' ophthalmopathy (grade 1-6, ATA classification) were treated with Cyclosporin-A, systemically in combination with methylprednisolone. We observed slight or moderate favourable effect in 9 cases. Our data suggest that the benefit was due to the methylprednisolone, the effectivity of which was enhanced by the cyclosporin even in the glucocorticoid-resistant cases.
