Activation of hypoxia-inducible factor 1α (HIF1α) contributes to blood-retinal barrier (BRB) breakdown and pathological neovascularization responsible for vision loss in ischemic retinal diseases. During disease progression, mitochondrial biology is altered to adapt to the ischemic environment created by initial vascular dysfunction, but the mitochondrial adaptive mechanisms, which ultimately contribute to the pathogenesis of ischemic retinopathy, remain incompletely understood. In the present study, it is identified that expression of mitochondrial chaperone tumor necrosis factor receptor-associated protein 1 (TRAP1) is essential for BRB breakdown and pathologic retinal neovascularization in mouse models mimicking ischemic retinopathies.

Background: Duodenal leak is a feared complication of repair, and innovative complex repairs with adjunctive measures (CRAM) were developed to decrease both leak occurrence and severity when leaks occur. Data on the association of CRAM and duodenal leak are sparse, and its impact on duodenal leak outcomes is nonexistent. We hypothesized that primary repair alone (PRA) would be associated with decreased duodenal leak rates; however, CRAM would be associated with improved recovery and outcomes when leaks do occur.

Background: Genetic testing for breast cancer susceptibility is widely used, but for many genes, evidence of an association with breast cancer is weak, underlying risk estimates are imprecise, and reliable subtype-specific risk estimates are lacking.

Methods: We used a panel of 34 putative susceptibility genes to perform sequencing on samples from 60,466 women with breast cancer and 53,461 controls. In separate analyses for protein-truncating variants and rare missense variants in these genes, we estimated odds ratios for breast cancer overall and tumor subtypes.

Background: Although 1-stent with provisional approach is the preferred strategy for the treatment of bifurcation lesions, the optimal treatment strategy according to lesion location is still debatable. This study aimed to identify whether clinical outcomes according to treatment strategy differed between left main (LM) and non-LM bifurcation lesions in the second-generation drug-eluting stent era.

Methods: The Coronary Bifurcation Stenting registry III is a retrospective multicenter registry of 2648 patients with bifurcation lesions who underwent percutaneous coronary intervention with second-generation drug-eluting stent.

The naphthoimidazolium borane 4 is shown to be a selective probe for HOCl over other reactive oxygen species. Unlike other boronate-reactive oxygen species (ROS) fluorogenic probes that are oxidized by HOCl through a nucleophilic borono-Dakin oxidation mechanism, probe 4 is distinguished by its electrophilic oxidation mechanism involving B-H bond cleavage. Two-photon microscopy experiments in living cells and tissues with the probe 4 demonstrate the monitoring of endogenous HOCl generation and changes in HOCl concentrations generated in the endoplasmic reticulum during oxidative stress situations.

MK801 and ketamine, which are phencyclidine (PCP) derivative N-methyl-d-aspartate receptor (NMDAr) blockers, reportedly enhance the function of 5-hydroxytryptamine (HT)-2A receptors (5-HTRs). Both are believed to directly affect the pathogenesis of schizophrenia, as well as hypertension. 5-HTR signaling involves the inhibition of Kv conductance.

N-Heterocyclic carbene (NHC) boranes undergo oxidative hydrolysis to give imidazolium salts with excellent kinetic selectivity for HOCl over other reactive oxygen species (ROS), including peroxides and peroxynitrite. Selectivity for HOCl results from the electrophilic oxidation mechanism of NHC boranes, which stands in contrast to the nucleophilic oxidation mechanism of arylboronic acids with ROS. The change in polarity that accompanies the conversion of NHC boranes to imidazolium salts can control the formation of emissive excimers, forming the basis for the design of the first fluorescence probe for ROS based on the oxidation of B-H bonds.

Objective: Mid-trimester amniocentesis continues to be used for the prenatal diagnosis of chromosomal anomalies and other genetic disorders. Analysis of amniotic fluid obtained at the time of mid-trimester genetic amniocentesis identifies those patients who are at risk for early spontaneous preterm delivery. This is based on a solid body of evidence that found subclinical intra-amniotic inflammation/infection to be causally linked to early spontaneous preterm birth.

An approach of presenting new reducing reagents, sodium-benzophenone (Na-B) or Na-B in the presence of the hydrazine (Na-B-H) system under light exposure could produce rGOs with/without N-doping at room temperature in both the solution phase and on a solid substrate. Benzophenone activated those solutions acting as a photosensitizer under light. It was assumed that the newly generated radical anions with electrons from Na-B under light can reduce GO to rGO sheets (rGONa-B1).

NOD mouse-derived beta-cell-specific cytotoxic T-cell (beta-CTL) clones are diabetogenic in adult NOD mice, but only if co-injected with splenic CD4+ T-cells from diabetic animals. This investigation was initiated to determine whether infiltration of pancreatic islets by beta-CTL is a major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I-restricted response, and whether beta-CTL has a direct cytopathic effect on beta-cells in vivo. Pancreatic islets from BALB/c (H-2d) or B6 (H-2b) mice were transplanted under the renal capsule of streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic (NOD x BALB/c) F1 (H-2Kd, H-2Dd,b) or NOD x B6) F1 (H-2Kd,b, H-2Db) mice, respectively.
