In Study A, the incidence of arterial oxygen desaturation was studied using pulse oximetry (SaO2) in 100 sedated and 100 nonsedated patients breathing room air who underwent diagnostic upper gastrointestinal endoscopy. Hypoxia (SaO2 92% or less of at least 15 s duration) occurred in 17% and 6% of sedated patients and nonsedated patients, respectively (p < 0.03).

Magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) and absorption spectra of metal bacteriochlorin complexes have been measured on bacteriochlorophyll (BChl) a in various solvents and different forms of light-harvesting complexes 1 (LH1 complexes). In hydrophilic organic solvents, the MCD intensity of the Q(y)(0-0) transition of BChl a was sensitive to the wavelength of absorption maximum of Q(x)(0-0), and the ratio of MCD Q(y)(0-0) intensity to the dipole strength (B/D) was inversely proportional to the difference in energy between the Q(x)(0-0) and Q(y)(0-0). The similar correlation has been observed in metal chlorin derivatives as previously reported.

Magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) and absorption spectra have been measured on three intact photosynthetic pigments with the chlorin ring as macrocycle: chlorophyll a, bacteriochlorophyll c and d, in various hydrophilic organic solvents. The MCD intensity of a Qy(0-0) transition for the Mg chlorin derivative was sensitive to the coordination state of the central Mg atom by the solvent molecules. The coordination number has been characterized in terms of the relationship between the ratio of Qy(0-0) MCD intensity to its dipole strength (B/D) and the difference in energies of Qx(0-0) and Qy(0-0) transitions.

The stereochemistry of new acetophenones, cynandione B-D (2-4), isolated from Cynanchum taiwanianum, elucidated by computer modelling calculation and NOESY spectrum. It establishes the absolute configurations of cynandiones B-D (2-4) as 7R; 7"S, 7S; 7"S and 7R; 7"R, respectively. Cynandione B (2) strongly inhibited the release of beta-glucuronidase and lysozyme in formyl-methionyl-leucyl-phenylalanine (fMLP)-stimulated rat neutrophils in a concentration-dependent manner with IC50 values of 1.

Cobalt hexammine [Co(NH3)6(3+)] is an efficient DNA complexing agent which significantly perturbs nucleic acid secondary structure. We have employed red excitation (647.1 nm) from a krypton laser to obtain Raman spectra of the highly colored complexes formed between cobalt hexammine and crystals of the DNA oligomers, d(5BrCGAT5BrCG) and d(CGCGATCGCG), both of which incorporate out-of-alternation pyrimidine/purine sequences.

The membrane-bound form and a solubilized and purified form of the Ca2+-ATPase from human erythrocyte have been proteolyzed under controlled conditions by highly purified Ca2+-dependent neutral cysteine-protease, calpain I, in the absence and in the presence of the calmodulin-calcium complex. In the absence of calmodulin the 136-kDa enzyme was transformed into a group of fragments of 125-124 kDa, followed by the slower formation of a second group of fragments of 82-80 kDa. These heterogeneous fragments were capable of forming an acylphosphate intermediate.

Several differentiation-specific genes, including those for collagen IV and laminin, are induced by retinoic acid (RA) in mouse F9 teratocarcinoma cells. Dibutyryl cAMP can enhance the effect of RA in these cells, but dibutyryl cAMP alone does not induce these genes. Inhibition of RNA synthesis with 5-6-dichloro-1-B-D-ribofuranosylbenzimidazole prevents the induction of these genes by RA; inhibition of DNA synthesis with aphidicolin does not prevent the induction.
