Background: In 2002-2005, we conducted a phase I/II clinical trial where a new allergy immunotherapy (AIT) route was introduced: intralymphatic immunotherapy (ILIT). Ultrasound guidance allowed injection of allergen directly into inguinal lymph nodes. Grass pollen-allergic patients received 3 injections with 1-month intervals.

Despite huge advancements in the process of synthesizing small molecules as part of one-bead-one-compound (OBOC) libraries, progress lags in the ability to screen these libraries against proteins of interest. Recently, we developed a method to screen OBOC libraries in which a target protein is labeled with a near-infrared (NIR) range fluorophore. The labeled protein incubates with beads of a library in a 96-well plate, then the plate is imaged for fluorescence.

Hypersensitivity reactions to alcoholic beverages (particularly red wine) are relatively frequent, affecting 10% of the general population. Hypersensitivity reactions due to alcoholic drinks, mainly in the form of airway reactions (rhinitis and asthma), occur significantly more frequently in persons with pre-existing rhinitis and asthma. In terms of pathogenesis, it has to be differentiated between immunologic, mainly IgE-mediated, hypersensitivity reactions (wine allergies), and intolerance reactions in which no causative allergen-specific immune mechanisms can be detected.
