Background: An adequate number of prenatal consultations is beneficial to the health of the mother and fetus. Guidelines recommend an average of 5-14 consultations. Daily practice, however, shows that some women attend the midwifery practice more frequently.

Is first trimester vitamin D status in nulliparous women associated with pregnancy related hypertensive disorders?

Objectives: this study aimed to explore if maternal vitamin D status in early pregnancy was associated with pre-eclampsia and pregnancy-induced hypertension. Relationships between vitamin D status and blood pressure at the start of pregnancy as well as the occurrence of a mid-pregnancy drop in blood pressure were also explored. This secondary analysis was completed to investigate a possible mechanism for the association between vitamin D status and pregnancy related hypertensive disorders.

The preferential homing of a platelet derived growth factor receptor-recognizing macromolecule to fibroblast-like cells in fibrotic tissue.

Platelet derived growth factor (PDGF) is a key factor in the induction and progression of fibrotic diseases with the activated fibroblast as its target cell. Drug targeting to the PDGF-receptor is explored as a new approach to treat this disease. Therefore, we constructed a macromolecule with affinity for the PDGF-beta receptor by modification of albumin with a small peptide that recognises this PDGF-beta receptor.

The pharmacokinetic and biological activity profile of dexamethasone targeted to sinusoidal endothelial and Kupffer cells.

Unlabelled: Dexamethasone (Dexa) was coupled to human serum albumin (Dexa10-HSA) for the targeting of this anti-inflammatory drug to Kupffer cells (KC) and sinusoidal endothelial cells (SEC) in the liver: key players in the pathogenesis of acute and chronic inflammatory liver diseases like fibrosis. Cell-specific delivery of Dexa may increase its efficacy and prevent side effects. We, therefore, studied the pharmacokinetic profile, efficacy, and toxicity of Dexa10-HSA in bile duct ligation (BDL)-induced fibrosis in rats.

Targeting dexamethasone to Kupffer cells: effects on liver inflammation and fibrosis in rats.

Kupffer cells (KC) play an important role in the pathogenesis of inflammatory liver diseases leading to fibrosis. Anti-inflammatory drugs are only effective when administered at high doses that may cause side effects. Therefore, dexamethasone coupled to mannosylated albumin (Dexa(5)-Man(10)-HSA) was designed by us to selectively deliver this anti-inflammatory drug to the KC.
