Background: Gender imbalance and poor representation of women complicate the anesthesiology workforce crisis in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). This study was performed to obtain a better understanding of gender disparity among medical graduates and anesthesiologists in SSA.

Methods: Using a quantitative, participatory, insider research study, led by female anesthesiologists as the national coordinators in SSA, we collected data from academic or national health authorities and agencies.

Cold burns are still exceptional in sub-Saharan Africa. However, the promotion of a wider use of domestic gas (commercial butane) has led to the growth of petrochemical industries. As a consequence, there is an increased risk of the occurrence of such burns (referred to as frostbite).

We describe three cases of Lyell syndrome - toxic epidermal necrolysis - occurring in patients under the respiratory service of CHU de Cocody in Abidjan in the Ivory Coast, who were undergoing anti-tuberculous (TB) chemotherapy. All three were adult males who were HIV-positive, but none of them were receiving anti-retroviral treatment. They were on standard anti-TB treatment; rifampicin, isoniazid, pyazinamide and ethambutol.

Thermal burns result in severe electrolytes disturbances which are life-threatening when the percentage of burnt body surface area (BSA) is above 20% in adults and 10% in children. If electrolytes disturbances are often mentioned in the physiopathology of burns, they are less documented in the daily practice of the follow up. The objective of this work was to describe variation of blood and urine electrolytes concentrations in severe burns.
