Article Synopsis
  • The study measured energy expenditure and how the body used carbohydrates, proteins, and fats in ten healthy adults both while fasting and after eating.
  • Significant increases in energy metabolism, carbohydrate utilization, and water production were noted after participants consumed a 900 kcal mixed meal.
  • The results indicated fat synthesis in the postabsorptive state, but there were no significant changes in protein utilization observed.

Stimulation of the renin-angiotensin system has been implicated in the pathogenesis of post-ischemic and nephrotoxic acute renal failure. This study was designed to determine the effect of d-l propranolol in glycerol induced acute renal failure in rats. 50% glycerol administered alone, induced a significant rise in blood urea and plasma renin concentration but no significant change in renal renin concentration.

The effects of mechanical ventilation with and without positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) on hemodynamic performance and blood-gas exchange were studied in ten patients following open-heart surgery. Ventilation at constant tidal volume (15 ml/kg body weight) with 10 cm H2O PEEP following aortic valve replacement (AVR) IN FIVE PATIENTs without pulmonary vascular disease was associated with the following significant changes: a rise in arterial Po2, a fall in the alveolar-arterial Po2 gradient when Fio2 = 1.0, decreases in calculated Qs/Qt and cardiac index.
