A Scoring System for Predicting Nonunion After Intramedullary Nailing of Femoral Shaft Fractures.

Introduction: Femoral shaft nonunion negatively affects patient quality of life. Although multiple risk factors have been identified for femoral shaft nonunion after intramedullary nail (IMN) fixation, there is no quantitative model for predicting nonunion.

Study Description: The study is a retrospective cohort study of patients with femoral shaft fractures treated at two level one trauma centers who were followed to fracture union or nonunion.

The 2023 Austrian-Swiss-German Fellowship.

The Austrian-Swiss-German Fellowship was set up in 1978 to facilitate a program through which surgeons from the German-speaking countries of Austria, Switzerland, and Germany could visit the United Kingdom, Canada, and the United States of America. In 2023, surgeons Brian Mullis and Satish Kutty, representing the American Orthopaedic Association and the British Orthopaedic Association, respectively, visited centers in Austria, Switzerland, and Germany over the course of 4 weeks. The effect of coronal plane angulation on patient reported outcome measures of operatively treated distal femur fractures: A multi-center prospective evaluation.

Objectives: The goal of this trial was to determine whether coronal plane angulation affects functional and clinical outcomes after the fixation of distal femur fractures.

Design: Multicenter, randomized controlled trial SETTING: 20 academic trauma centers PATIENTS/PARTICIPANTS: 156 patients with distal femur fractures were enrolled. 123 patients were followed 12 months.

Multicenter, Prospective, Observational Study of Nonoperative Versus Operative Treatment for High-Energy Midshaft Clavicle Fractures.

Objectives: Evaluate if nonoperative or operative treatment of displaced clavicle fractures delivers reduced rates of nonunion and improved Disability of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand (DASH) scores.

Design: Multicenter, prospective, observational.

Setting: Seven Level 1 Trauma Centers in the United States.

Skeletal Traction for Isolated Femur Fractures Does Not Reduce Opioid Consumption.

Objectives: Isolated femoral shaft fractures can be treated preoperatively with skeletal traction (TXN) or maintenance of a position of comfort (COMF). The goal of this retrospective review was to determine whether preoperative opioid consumption differs significantly between these forms of treatment.
