Introduction: Early wound coverage is one of the most essential factors influencing the survival of extensively burned patients, especially those with a total body surface area (TBSA) burned greater than 50 %. In patients with limited donor sites available for autografting, techniques such as the Meek micrograft procedure or cultured epidermal allografts (CEA) have proven to be viable alternatives. In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we analyzed the outcomes of different wound coverage techniques in patients with massive burn injuries ≥ 50 % TBSA in the past 17 years.

Tremor Induced by Focal Peripheral Nerve Entrapment: A Case Series.

Little is known about tremors caused by peripheral nerve entrapment. We report two cases of tremors caused by peripheral nerve compressions. Two patients presented with intentional tremors combined with peripheral nerve compression symptoms on their affected hand.

Normothermic Ex Situ Machine Perfusion of Vascularized Composite Allografts with Oxygen Microcarriers for 12 Hours Using Real-Time Mitochondrial Redox Quantification.

Background: Normothermic ex situ perfusion of vascularized composite allografts (VCAs) necessitates high oxygen demand and, thus, increased metabolic activity, which, in turn, requires the use of blood-based perfusion solutions. However, blood-derived perfusates, in turn, constitute an antigenic load. To circumvent this immunogenic problem, we used a perfusate enriched with acellular dextrane oxygen microcarriers to perfuse rat hindlimbs.

A review of utilities and costs of treating upper extremity amputations with vascularized composite allotransplantation versus myoelectric prostheses in Canada.

Background: Hand vascularized composite allotransplantation (VCA) and myoelectric prostheses have proven their efficacy for treating hand amputation. Despite reported functional outcomes, the lack of consensus on VCA versus myoelectric prostheses brought us to report on their utilities and costs within the Canadian healthcare system.

Methods: A review of utility outcomes and costs was performed for VCA and myoelectric prostheses and a comparison between unilateral versus bilateral amputations was made.
