The Fifth Annual Symposium of the Midwest Aging Consortium.

As the healthcare burden caused by an increasingly aging population rapidly rises, a pressing need exists for innovative geroscience research that can elucidate aging mechanisms and precipitate the development of therapeutic interventions to support healthy aging. The Fifth Annual Midwest Aging Consortium Aging Research symposium, held from April 28-30, 2024, was hosted by The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio and featured presentations from investigators across the Midwestern United States. This report summarizes the research presented at the symposium, whose topics included cellular senescence and the aging brain, metabolism and metabolic interventions, nutrition, redox mechanisms and biomarkers, and stress mechanisms.

Vimentin modulates regulatory T cell receptor-ligand interactions at distal pole complex, leading to dysregulated host response to viral pneumonia.

Forkhead box P3 (Foxp3) regulatory T cells (Tregs) resolve acute inflammation and repair the injured lung after viral pneumonia. Vimentin is a critical protein in the distal pole complex (DPC) of Tregs. This study reveals the inhibitory effect of vimentin on the suppressive and reparative capacity of Tregs.

Sub30: Feasibility study of a pre-hospital extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) in patients with refractory out-of-hospital cardiac arrest in London, United Kingdom.

Aim: Sub30 study is an open-label, prospective, single-arm feasibility study with the primary objective of assessing the logistics, feasibility, and safety of ECPR delivery in a pre-hospital setting for refractory out-of-hospital cardiac arrest patients in London, United Kingdom.

Results: Forty-three eligible patients were identified by London Ambulance Service over 27 trial recruitment days during a 13-month study period resulting in the despatch of the pre-hospital ECPR team to 18 patients. Five patients met full criteria and were cannulated for ECPR.

Magma Chamber Response to Ice Unloading: Applications to Volcanism in the West Antarctic Rift System.

Volcanic activity has been shown to affect Earth's climate in a myriad of ways. One such example is that eruptions proximate to surface ice will promote ice melting. In turn, the crustal unloading associated with melting an ice sheet affects the internal dynamics of the underlying magma plumbing system.
