No difference in disease-free survival after oral cancer resection with close tumor margins in patients with and without postoperative radiotherapy.

We conducted a retrospective follow-up study to determine if adjunctive radiotherapy (RT) affected disease-free survival in patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) who were found to have close surgical margins after tumor resection. Our study population was made up of 110 patients-72 men and 38 women, aged 30 to 94 years (median: 66) at the time of diagnosis. Their follow-up ranged from 12 days to 5.

This case report is of a four-year-old otherwise healthy girl, who was presented to an ear, nose and throat department with salivation and suspected ingestion of a metallic pendant while falling asleep. An X-ray of the chest and upper neck confirmed the suspicion showing an approximately 2 × 2 cm foreign body shaped as a star located in the throat. In general anaesthesia, a metal necklace pendant was removed from the oesophagus mouth.

Quantifying biosynthetic human growth hormone in Escherichia coli with capillary electrophoresis under hydrophobic conditions.

A method has been developed which is able to quantitate the content of precursor biosynthetic human growth hormone (Pre-bhGH) in the cytosol of E. coli cells containing the gene for human growth hormone (hGH). The method uses hydrophobic C18 coated capillaries with native biosynthetic human growth hormone (bhGH) as an internal standard.

The growth hormone (GH)-binding protein cloned from human IM-9 lymphocytes modulates the down-regulation of GH receptors by 22- and 20-kilodalton human GH in IM-9 lymphocytes and the biological effects of the hormone in Nb2 lymphoma cells.

The cDNA coding for the 246-amino acid long N-terminal extracellular portion of the human (h) GH receptor, corresponding to the circulating GH-binding protein (hGHBP), was cloned by polymerase chain reaction from human IM-9 lymphocytes. The cDNA sequence was identical to that reported for human liver and placenta and demonstrated alternative splicing of exon 3. The protein with the exon 3-encoded domain was expressed and secreted in glycosylated form from baby hamster kidney (BHK) cells, purified to homogeneity, and sequenced; the amino acid sequence was identical to that predicted from liver cDNA.

The dissociation of tumor-induced weight loss from hypoglycemia in a transplantable pluripotent rat islet tumor results in the segregation of stable alpha- and beta-cell tumor phenotypes.

We previously established pluripotent transformed rat islet cell lines, MSL-cells, of which certain clones have been used to study processes of islet beta-cell maturation, including the transcriptional activation of the insulin gene induced by in vivo passage. Thus, successive sc transplantation in NEDH rats resulted in stable hypoglycemic insulinoma tumor lines, such as MSL-G2-IN. Occasionally, hypoglycemia as well as severe weight loss were observed in the early tumor passages of MSL-G and the subclone, NHI-5B, which carry the transfected neomycin and human insulin genes as unique clonal markers.
