We have previously found that the presence of an H-type excitonic dimer formed by two fluorophores covalently bound to an oligonucleotide allows the delivery of such a polymer into live cells without inducing toxicity. We are now using time-resolved fluorescence measurements in solution to understand the molecular dynamics of an antisense probe and how pairing with complementary sense strands of various lengths and degrees of complementarity affects the antisense strand's properties. We report that a DNA strand composed of 30 residues and labeled with an H-type excitonic Cyanine-5/Cyanine-5 dimer shows a predominant 1.

The paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus (PVN) regulates physiological and behavioural responses evoked by stressful stimuli, but the local neurochemical and signalling mechanisms involved are not completely understood. The soluble guanylate cyclase (sGC) within the PVN is implicated in autonomic and cardiovascular control in rodents under resting conditions. However, the involvement of PVN sGC-mediated signalling in stress responses is unknown.

Status epilepticus (SE) is a life-threatening medical emergency with significant morbidity and mortality. SE is associated with a robust and sustained increase in serum glucocorticoids, reaching concentrations sufficient to activate the dense population of glucocorticoid receptors (GRs) expressed among hippocampal excitatory neurons. Glucocorticoid exposure can increase hippocampal neuron excitability; however, whether activation of hippocampal GRs during SE exacerbates seizure severity remains unknown.

Topical povidone-iodine, chlorhexidine, bacitracin, and vancomycin are commonly used antiseptic and antimicrobial agents to reduce risk and treat surgical site infections in numerous orthopedic procedures. Chondrocytes potentially may be exposed to these agents during operative procedures. The impact of these topical agents on chondrocyte viability is unclear.

Objective: Glucocorticoid levels rise rapidly following status epilepticus and remain elevated for weeks after the injury. To determine whether glucocorticoid receptor activation contributes to the pathological sequelae of status epilepticus, mice were treated with a novel glucocorticoid receptor modulator, C108297.

Methods: Mice were treated with either C108297 or vehicle for 10 days beginning one day after pilocarpine-induced status epilepticus.
