Objective: Patients with acute respiratory failure often require mechanical ventilation to reduce the work of breathing and improve gas exchange; however, this may exacerbate lung injury. Protective ventilation strategies, characterized by low tidal volumes (≤ 8mL/kg of predicted body weight) and limited plateau pressure below 30cmH2O, have shown improved outcomes in patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome. However, in the transition to spontaneous ventilation, it can be challenging to maintain tidal volume within protective levels, and it is unclear whether low tidal volumes during spontaneous ventilation impact patient outcomes.

Currently, meningococcus serogroup C (MenC), cc 103, is responsible for most of the cases of the disease in Brazil. The aim of this study was to investigate the seroprevalence of bactericidal antibody (SBA) against representative epidemic strains of MenC, (N753/00 strain, C:23:P1.

The goal of this study was to investigate the bactericidal antibody response and the development of CD4(+) T cell memory during the convalescent phase of patients infected with N. menigitidis.

To provide additional insight into the nature of ACT, we determined the gene expression profiles of 24 pediatric tumors (five adenomas, 18 carcinomas, and one undetermined) and seven normal adrenal glands. Distinct patterns of gene expression, validated by quantitative real-time PCR and Western blot analysis, were identified that distinguish normal adrenal cortex from tumor.

In the absence of an immediately available serum ethylene glycol (EG) assay, the diagnosis of EG poisoning is usually based on anamnesis, clinical findings and presence of metabolic acidosis with elevated serum anion gap, elevated serum osmol gap, hypocalcemia and crystalluria. We report two cases of EG poisoning, both presenting without an elevated serum osmol gap and we discuss conditions which facilitate such a presentation, especially delayed hospital admission. Finally, we confirm the fact that determination of the osmol gap can fail as a screen for EG poisoning.
