Article Synopsis
  • Cryptogenic strokes make up 30-40% of ischemic strokes in young people, often lacking clear causes; some may have genetic roots, but known genetic factors explain only a few cases.
  • A case-control study involving 105 young ischemic stroke patients and 215 matched controls was conducted to evaluate 16 gene polymorphisms linked to these strokes.
  • The study found significant associations with several gene variants (e.g., MTHFR, KNG1, FXII) in specific groups, indicating that genetics, along with ethnicity and gender, could influence the risk of cryptogenic strokes in young Indians, highlighting the need for further research.

Background: Prothrombin (PT) G20210A is one of the genetic polymorphisms associated with thrombophilia. Studies show a low prevalence for this polymorphism in Asian populations with only one subject reported from India. We studied the prevalence and association of this polymorphism in patients with arterial and venous strokes and their matched controls in south and north India.

The present study aims at investigating the use of redox dyes as non-diffusional electron mediators in hydrogen peroxide biosensors using horseradish peroxidase (HRP). We observe that the two redox dyes Safranine O and Neutral Red covalently bound to HRP, efficiently mediate electron transfer from the active site of the enzyme to the electrode surface. Dyes bound to the enzyme using a spacer arm diaminohexane further enhance the electron transfer.
