Landscapers are exposed to noise, carbon monoxide (CO), respirable dust, and respirable crystalline silica (RCS) generated from the tools they use. Although engineering controls are available to reduce these exposures, no previous study has evaluated chronic exposures to landscapers in different work settings and compared exposures from landscaping tools with and without engineering controls. This field study of workers in the landscaping services industry documented the occupational exposures of 80 participants at 11 varied worksites to noise, CO, respirable dust, and RCS using personal breathing zone sampling.

Heart valve replacement in pediatric cardiothoracic surgery poses problems because conventional heart valve implants do not have the ability to grow. This mandates serial reoperations for implant exchanges until an adult size implant can fit. Partial heart transplantation eliminates these reoperations because the transplanted valves grow.

Background: Reproductive efficiency is paramount in the dairy industry, where early pregnancy detection of dairy cows will allow to detect the non-pregnant animals early, thus enabling to re-synchronize them and getting them pregnant leading to decrease in calving interval, which, in turn, is critical for maximizing productivity and economic gain. The objective of this study was to evaluate the colour Doppler ultrasonography (CDUS) and peripheral blood leukocytes (PBLs)-based pregnancy-associated biomarker mRNAs expression for the earliest detection of pregnancy status in the dairy cows at post insemination. Intensively managed animals were ovulation synchronized and subjected to timed artificial insemination (TAI).

Article Synopsis
  • EBV DNAemia surveillance is used to prevent post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder (PTLD) in lung transplant recipients (LTRs), but its effectiveness in adult seropositive patients is unclear.
  • A study analyzed EBV viral loads in seropositive LTRs and compared levels between those who developed PTLD and those who didn't, revealing that peak viral loads were only significantly higher after PTLD was suspected.
  • The study found low positive predictive values (PPVs) for moderate (14.7%) and high-grade (33.3%) EBV DNAemia in indicating risk for future PTLD, suggesting improved diagnostic approaches are needed.
