The double diagnosis is a tool which can be used to develop an expanding ecologic perception of the patient and his illness. Intrafamily relationships can be related to the development of recurrent physical illness among family members, and an increased understanding of the relevance of such data can clarify the epidemiology of many clinical syndromes, thus allowing the formulation of a more comprehensive plan of medical management.
