Extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation (eCPR) is a method of acute resuscitation for patients who have suffered a cardiac arrest through the utilization of an extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) pump. The use and efficacy of eCPR is an active area of investigation with ongoing clinical investigation across the world. Since its inception, ECMO has been utilized for several conditions, but more recently, its efficacy in maintaining cerebrovascular perfusion in eCPR has generated interest in more widespread utilization, particularly in cases of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest.

The use of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) has emerged as a rescue intervention for hemodynamically unstable patients and prophylactic intraprocedural hemodynamic support in the cardiac catheterization laboratory. The prompt initiation of ECMO provides immediate hemodynamic support and allows for the completion of bridging and/or life-saving interventions. However, there are no clinical practice guidelines for the use of extracorporeal support in this area.

Specifically, a number of minimally invasive and interventional treatment options have allowed for the treatment of high and prohibitive risk surgical patients. Further, technology is allowing for the development of innovative surgical and transcatheter valve models, which will advance the treatment of aortic valve disease in the future.
