A comparison of the effectiveness of QCPR and conventional CPR training in final-year medical students at a South African university.

Introduction: High-quality cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) saves lives. Training on basic first aid manikins allows students to practice manoeuvres and provides realistic resistance to chest compressions. Conventional CPR has no real-time feedback to observe the quality of CPR.

Red- and blue-detuned magneto-optical trapping with liquid crystal variable retarders.

We exploit red- and blue-detuned magneto-optical trapping (MOT) of Rb benefitting from a simplified setup and a novel approach based on liquid crystal variable retarders (LCVR). To maintain the trapping forces when switching from a red- to a blue-detuned MOT, the handedness of the circular polarization of the cooling beams needs to be reversed. LCVRs allow fast polarization control and represent compact, simple, and cost-efficient components, which can easily be implemented in existing laser systems.

Don't believe everything you hear: Routine validation of audiovisual information in children and adults.

Previous research has shown that the validation of incoming information during language comprehension is a fast, efficient, and routine process (epistemic monitoring). Previous research on this topic has focused on epistemic monitoring during reading. The present study extended this research by investigating epistemic monitoring of audiovisual information.

Deceleration, precooling, and multi-pass stopping of highly charged ions in Be⁺ Coulomb crystals.

Preparing highly charged ions (HCIs) in a cold and strongly localized state is of particular interest for frequency metrology and tests of possible spatial and temporal variations of the fine structure constant. Our versatile preparation technique is based on the generic modular combination of a pulsed ion source with a cryogenic linear Paul trap. Both instruments are connected by a compact beamline with deceleration and precooling properties.
