[Economic approaches to smoking].

In order to assess regulator's legitimacy in discouraging people from smoking, economists model tobacco addiction. In this paper, we review the extent economic literature about tobacco consumption and tobacco addiction. Two main approaches are singled out.

Distal genes of the nuo operon of Rhodobacter capsulatus equivalent to the mitochondrial ND subunits are all essential for the biogenesis of the respiratory NADH-ubiquinone oxidoreductase.

Seven out of the 13 proteins encoded by the mitochondrial genome of mammals (peptides ND1 to ND6 plus ND4L) are subunits of the respiratory NADH-ubiquinone oxidoreductase (complex I). The function of these ND subunits is still poorly understood. We have used the NADH-ubiquinone oxidoreductase of Rhodobacter capsulatus as a model for the study of the function of these proteins.

Identification of five Rhodobacter capsulatus genes encoding the equivalent of ND subunits of the mitochondrial NADH-ubiquinone oxidoreductase.

We previously reported the sequencing of two genes (ndhA and ndhI) encoding two of the subunits of the type-I NADH-ubiquinone oxidoreductase from Rhodobacter capsulatus (Rc). The present paper deals with the cloning and characterization of a chromosomal fragment clustering five new Rc genes which encode subunits of this enzyme. This gene cluster is located immediately downstream from ndhA and ndhI, and also contains two unidentified open reading frames (urf2, urf3).

[Alcohol and salt consumption. Two closely related variables].

In a transverse epidemiological study, 3,329 male firm-employees were questioned on their daily alcohol consumption and on their use of salt during meals, which divided them into four categories: those who virtually never added salt to their food; those who salted their food according to its taste; those who salted systematically, and those who added salt to a salt-free family cooking necessitated by the health of another member of that family. This questioning showed that as the alcohol consumption increased the proportion of subjects who salted their food without tasting or because of salt-free familial meals was greater (P = 0.0018) and, conversely, the proportion of subjects who virtually never added salt to their food decreased (P = 0.

[Association of cutaneous myxoma, recurrent cardiac myxoma and Cushing's syndrome (Carney's complex). Description of a case and review of the literature].

The authors report the case of a rare clinical syndrome which has recently been called Carney's complex or "myxomas, spotty pigmentation and endocrine overactivity". Three components of this complex are described: cutaneous myxomas, Cushing's syndrome of unpredictable evolution treated by bilateral adrenalectomy for multiple adrenal adenoma and left atrial myxoma which recurred twice. The authors review the literature and discuss the practical implications of this new syndrome which may be familial.
