Comparative sequence analysis permits unraveling the molecular processes underlying gene evolution. Many statistical methods generate candidate positions within genes, such as fast or slowly evolving sites, coevolving groups of residues, sites undergoing positive selection, or changes in evolutionary rates. Understanding the functional causes of these evolutionary patterns requires combining the results of these analyses and mapping them onto molecular structures, a complex task involving distinct coordinate referential systems.

An infrared absorption spectrum consisting in three lines observed around 2223 cm(-1) at liquid helium temperature characterizes a defect common in silicon crystals containing hydrogen. Several investigations of this spectrum have converged towards its assignment to a fully hydrogenated lattice vacancy defect V(Si-H)4. However, the fact that the ratios of the intensities of the three lines have been reported to be proportional to the natural abundances of the three silicon isotopes suggests that only one Si atom is involved in the defect, apparently contradicting the above assignment.

The cloning of murine tryptophanyl-tRNA synthetase revealed the existence of at least three messenger RNAs able to code for this enzyme. In most of the tissues tested, two major mRNA species were detected. They are produced by alternative polyadenylation and they share the same open reading frame.
