Van der Pol oscillators and their generalizations are known to be a fundamental model in the theory of oscillations and their applications. Many objects of a different nature can be described using van der Pol-like equations under some circumstances; therefore, methods of reconstruction of such equations from experimental data can be of significant importance for tasks of model verification, indirect parameter estimation, coupling analysis, system classification, etc. The previously reported techniques were not applicable to time series with large measurement noise, which is usual in biological, climatological, and many other experiments.

The question of how much information the photoplethysmogram (PPG) signal contains on the autonomic regulation of blood pressure (BP) remains unsolved. This study aims to compare the low-frequency (LF) and high-frequency components of PPG and BP and assess their correlation with oscillations in interbeat (RR) intervals at similar frequencies. The PPG signal from the distal phalanx of the right index finger recorded using a reflective PPG sensor at green light, the BP signal from the left hand recorded using a Finometer, and RR intervals were analyzed.

Article Synopsis
  • A mathematical model for autonomic control of the cardiovascular system includes two self-exciting loops regulating heart rate and blood vessel tone based on baroreceptor activity.
  • The model analyzes how a healthy cardiovascular system adapts during a passive head-up tilt test, using computer simulations to track variables that are hard to measure directly, like noradrenaline concentration and blood pressure.
  • Results show the model's predictions align closely with experimental data from 50 healthy individuals, especially focusing on low-frequency oscillations in heart rate and blood pressure synchronization.

We propose a method for the reconstruction of time-delayed feedback systems having unobserved variables from scalar time series. The method is based on the modified initial condition approach, which allows one to significantly reduce the number of starting guesses for an unobserved variable with a time delay. The proposed method is applied to the reconstruction of the Lang-Kobayashi equations, which describe the dynamics of a single-mode semiconductor laser with external optical feedback.

The origin of complex irregular dynamics in a cardiovascular system is still being actively debated. Some hypotheses suggest the crucial role of stochastic modulation of cardiovascular parameters, while others argue for the importance of cardiac pacemakers' chaotic deterministic dynamics. In the present study, we estimate the largest Lyapunov exponent and the correlation dimension for the 4-h experimental interbeat intervals and the chaotic signals generated by the mathematical model of the cardiovascular system.
