Background: The psychological impact of malocclusion, social acceptance, self-esteem, and the development of personality traits are considerations that can affect the demand for orthodontic treatment. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of malocclusion severity and self-perceived smile and dental aesthetics on self-esteem among adolescents in Lagos, Nigeria.
Methods: This analytical cross-sectional study was performed among 393 adolescents (210 females and 183 males) at a university teaching hospital in Nigeria.
Background: Hyoid bone though constitute a small proportion of the human skeleton, its importance in relation to other facial structures cannot be overemphasized. Several studies have reported on hyoid bone position in relation to various types of malocclusion, however, to our knowledge, there has been no study on the relationship between the hyoid bone and bimaxillary incisor proclination.
Aim: The aim of this study was to assess the relative position of hyoid bone in individuals with and without bimaxillary incisor proclination as well as other related demographic factors.
Objective: The study objective was to assess the effect of adenoid hypertrophy on the dental arch dimensions of children in Ile-Ife, Nigeria.
Methods: Ninety patients aged 3-12 years attending the Otorhinolaryngology Clinic at Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Ile-Ife diagnosed as having hypertrophied adenoids and 90 children from the Child Dental Health Clinic were recruited as adenoid and control subjects respectively. Arch and palatal vault dimensions, including total arch length; inter-canine, inter-premolar, and inter-molar widths; palatal length; and palatal heights measured at three levels and palatal volume were determined for both groups from dental casts.
Background: Congenitally missing or aberrant morphology of maxillary lateral incisors may cause aesthetic and functional impairment of the affected individual. There is however paucity of information on its prevalence and pattern of presentation among Nigerians.
