Does the extent of neck surgery based on preoperative calcitonin level influence survival in medullary thyroid carcinoma: a retrospective tertiary centre experience.

Introduction: Medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) is a rare thyroid cancer arising from the calcitonin-secreting parafollicular cells. Previous studies suggested a preoperative calcitonin level >200ng/l is an indication for prophylactic lateral neck dissection (LND) to remove micrometastases and improve survival outcomes.

Methods: This retrospective single-centre study assessed the efficacy of preoperative calcitonin levels as a marker for determining need for prophylactic LND in MTC.

IgG4-related disease confined to the laryngopharynx: a case report highlighting the complexities in diagnosis for this rare cause of stridor.

This case represents only the 15th reported incidence of IgG4-related disease (IgG4-RD) affecting the laryngopharynx, adding diagnostic and therapeutic data for this rare condition and helping to inform the future management of these patients. A 66-year-old man presented with airway symptoms, and investigations by otolaryngology, cardiology and respiratory teams did not provide a clear diagnosis. Repeat biopsies of the laryngopharynx eventually confirmed a clinicopathological diagnosis of IgG4-RD.

Hematological Paraneoplastic Syndrome and Heparin-Induced Thrombocytopenia in Untreated Parotid Acinic Cell Carcinoma - A Case Report.

Rationale: Acinic cell carcinoma (ACC) is a rare and indolent malignancy commonly found in the parotid gland. This can give rise to paraneoplastic syndromes, which represent the clinical manifestations of indirect and remote events produced by tumour metabolites.

Patient Concerns: A 38-year-old Afro-Caribbean female suffered an indolent parotid mass.

Use of tracheal stenting in the palliation of anaplastic thyroid carcinoma: tertiary centre experience.

Background: Anaplastic thyroid carcinoma is rare but carries a poor prognosis. Anaplastic thyroid carcinoma leads to tracheal compression, airway compromise and eventually death. Airway compromise, a particularly distressing symptom, can be palliated with tracheal stenting.
