We have cloned a new Dlx gene (Dlx7) from human and mouse that may represent the mammalian orthologue of the newt gene NvHBox-5. The homeodomains of these genes are highly similar to all other vertebrate Dlx genes, and regions of similarity also exist between mammalian Dlx7 and a subset of vertebrate Dlx genes downstream of the homeodomain. The sequence divergence between human and mouse Dlx7 in these regions is greater than that predicted from comparisons of other vertebrate Dlx genes, however, and there is little sequence similarity upstream of the homeodomain both between these two genes and with other Dlx genes.

Homeobox genes encode DNA-binding transcription regulators that participate in the formation of embryonic pattern or contribute to cell-type specificity during metazoan development. Homeobox genes that regulate axial patterning and segmental identity (Hox/HOM genes) share a conserved clustered genomic organization. Mammals have four clusters that have likely arisen from the duplication of a single ancestral cluster.

A NH4Cl-HCO3(-)-mediated, acetazolamide modulated hemolysis test was carried out in seven patients with hereditary spherocytosis (HS), and the amount of enzyme antigen as well as activities of carbonic anhydrase (CA) were determined. Except for a decrease in CA-B activity (p less than 0.05), the amount of enzyme antigen, total and specific activities of both isozymes of CA and dependent activity of CA-C were within the normal range.
