The bacterium responsible for Lyme disease, , accumulates high levels of manganese without iron and possesses a polyploid genome, characteristics suggesting potential extreme resistance to radiation. Contrary to expectations, we report that wild-type B31 cells are radiosensitive, with a gamma-radiation survival limit for 10 wild-type cells of <1 kGy. Thus, we explored radiosensitivity through electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy by quantitating the fraction of Mn present as antioxidant Mn metabolite complexes (H-Mn).

Background: Animal-borne sensors ('bio-loggers') can record a suite of kinematic and environmental data, which are used to elucidate animal ecophysiology and improve conservation efforts. Machine learning techniques are used for interpreting the large amounts of data recorded by bio-loggers, but there exists no common framework for comparing the different machine learning techniques in this domain. This makes it difficult to, for example, identify patterns in what works well for machine learning-based analysis of bio-logger data.

Mn coordinated by orthophosphate (Pi), metabolites, or peptides acts as a superoxide dismutase (SOD), and these Mn antioxidant complexes are universally accumulated in extremely radiation-resistant cell types across the tree of life. This behavior prompted design of decapeptide DP1 (DEHGTAVMLK) as a Mn ligand, and development of a highly potent Mn-antioxidant (MDP) containing [Pi] = 25 mM, and [DP1] = 3 mM, the ratio found in the radioresistant bacterium , with [Mn] = 1 mM. MDP is an exceptional antioxidant, both in vitro and in vivo, and has reinvigorated the development of radiation-inactivated whole-cell vaccines.

In the heart, cell-matrix and cell-cell adhesions reorganize in response to increased cardiac demand and growth to promote cardiomyocyte maturation. Vinculin, a mechanosensitive adaptor protein, links filamentous actin to cell-matrix and cell-cell adhesions and is thus positioned to regulate adhesion reorganization. However, how the two adhesion systems are coordinated in the heart, and the role of vinculin in this process is poorly understood.

Background: This qualitative study used semi-structured interviews to examine registered dietitians' perspectives on diet, nutrition, and lifestyle communication for patients on GLP-1 medications for obesity management.

Methods: Through in-depth interviews with registered dietitians, this research identifies elements that could improve both the efficacy of GLP-1 medication therapies and patient adherence.

Results: indicate that a comprehensive approach, integrating patient communication with proactive management of side effects and ongoing lifestyle counseling, is essential for optimizing treatment outcomes.
