Article Synopsis
  • D-dimer tests, along with clinical pre-test probability scores, help assess the risk of venous thromboembolic events (VTE), but d-dimer levels can naturally rise with age.
  • A recent review found that using an age-adjusted D-dimer for patients over 50 improves specificity without sacrificing sensitivity in low-risk VTE cases.
  • This study analyzed patients who had ultrasound Doppler tests from 2011 to 2014, comparing the effectiveness of age-adjusted D-dimer levels against traditional cut-off values.
