Breast cancer is a major cause of cancer-related death in women worldwide. Non-coding RNAs are a potential resource to be used as an early diagnostic biomarker for breast cancer. Circular RNAs are a recently identified group of non-coding RNA with a significant role in disease development with potential utility in diagnosis/prognosis in cancer.

Phytic acid is a ubiquitous compound that chelates the micronutrients in food and hinder their absorption. Hence, breeding for low phytate content for producing stable low phytic acid () hybrids is essential. Phytic acid content in maize grains has been found to vary across environments and its stable expression has yet to be explored.

Breast cancer is the most common malignancy among women, with the highest incidence rate worldwide. Dysregulation of long noncoding RNAs during the preliminary stages of breast carcinogenesis is poorly understood. In this study, we performed RNA sequencing to identify long noncoding RNA expression profiles associated with early-stage breast cancer.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focused on using targeted resequencing to analyze 30 genes associated with hereditary cancers in 91 patient samples, building on previous work with BRCA1 and BRCA2 using PCR-dHPLC.
  • A total of 24 deleterious mutations were found, including common mutations in BRCA1 and BRCA2, as well as others in genes like p53 and ATM.
  • The researchers concluded that the next-generation sequencing (NGS) method is more sensitive and cost-effective than previous methods for detecting these mutations, although survival analysis showed no significant difference in outcomes based on mutation status.

Background: Hereditary cancers account for 5-10% of cancers. In this study BRCA1, BRCA2 and CHEK2*(1100delC) were analyzed for mutations in 91 HBOC/HBC/HOC families and early onset breast and early onset ovarian cancer cases.

Methods: PCR-DHPLC was used for mutation screening followed by DNA sequencing for identification and confirmation of mutations.
