Background: Following a similar trend among United States (US) medical students, US resident physicians are increasingly interested in pursuing global health education. Largely, residency education has lagged behind in addressing this demand. Time and curriculum requirements make meeting this need challenging.

Carotid atherosclerotic disease following childhood scalp irradiation.

Objective: During the first half of the 20th century, scalp irradiation was a standard treatment for children suffering from Tinea Capitis. These children are now more than 50 years old, reaching the age when manifestations of atherosclerosis are common. We investigated the possible association between childhood low dose scalp irradiation and development of carotid atherosclerosis in adulthood.

Differential outcomes after sirolimus-eluting stent implantation: comparing on-label versus off-label patients in the 'real world'.

Background: Randomized controlled trials indicate that sirolimus-eluting stents (SES) reduce the rates of restenosis and need for subsequent revascularization procedures, but patients enrolled in randomized trials represent a highly selected population. This study examined the performance of SES in a 'real world' setting by comparing the outcomes of trial-eligible versus ineligible patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention.

Objective: To determine the availability of early defibrillation and automated external defibrillators in nursing homes in selected cities.

Design: A standardized telephone survey was conducted of all skilled nursing facilities to characterize early defibrillation capabilities.

Setting: The study involved nursing homes in Philadelphia, Omaha, Seattle, and Boston.
