Nurse researchers in children's hospitals.

Little is known about the role of nurse researchers (NRs) and the structure of nursing research programs in children's hospitals in the United States. This descriptive study obtained survey data from 33 NRs. Data suggest that the NR role is emerging and has both commonalities and unique components when compared with the previous studies of NRs in adult hospitals.

Trichotillomania in connection with alopecia areata.

Alopecia areata and trichotillomania present the most frequent causes of circumscribed hair loss in children. The connection between trichotillomania and alopecia areata has confused former observers. It may result from scratching at the site of alopecia areata that is symptomatic with pruritus, initiating a habit-forming behavior, or patients with a mental predisposition may artificially prolong the disfigurement as the hair on the bald patches of alopecia areata regrows.

The frequency of malignant melanoma is increasing worldwide and comprises in middle Europe about 10 per 100,000 inhabitants per year; it is fatal in each forth or fifth patient. Risk factors may be endogenous, like fair skin with high sensitivity for sun exposure and the presence of many, possibly atypical ('dysplastic') naevi, or exogenous, e.g.

[Bacillary angiomatosis. A pseudoneoplastic infection in AIDS patients].

Bacillary angiomatosis is a newly recognized pseudoneoplastic vascular disease seen in the setting of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. The disease is characterized by a cutaneous infection with reddish papules or nodules that are similar to pyogenic granulomas or Kaposi's sarcoma in clinical appearance. It is caused by the mildly gram-negative bacillus Rochalimaea henselae, which can be identified in tissue sections by means of Warthin-Starry stain.
