A series of 19 patients suffering from cancers of the upper aero-digestive pathways was examined by a psychiatrist who assessed in particular the personality of the patient, the importance and impact of personal life events, the family context, and the place of the cancer in the life of the patient. There are numerous psycho-social problems, partially related to chronic alcoholism that was found very frequently. Isolation of the patient appears to be frequent, both within the family, albeit sometimes large, and in the workplace.

This mucormycosis is a rare affection that appears in patients with predisposing disease (diabetes, blood disorders) and is easily diagnosed, if considered, from clinical features. Diagnosis is confirmed by histopathology, culture sometimes identifying the causative fungus.

However, auditory canal cholesteatoma represents a separate clinical entity, although its pathogenicity remains unrecognized. Therapy may be medical or surgical, but a more eclectic therapeutic approach is to be preferred.
