An age-friendly approach to primary care in an academic health system.

Background: Age-friendly care, addressing what matters most, medications, mentation, and mobility, is a successful model for improving older adult care. We describe the initial outcomes of age-friendly care implementation in five primary care clinics in an academic health system.

Methods: In partnership with a regional quality improvement (QI) organization, we used practice facilitation to implement age-friendly care from July 2020 to June 2023.

Intrathecal/Intraventricular Linezolid in Multidrug-Resistant Ventriculitis.

 The use of intrathecal antibiotic therapy for the treatment of ventriculitis and/or meningitis has demonstrated efficacy especially when sterilization of the cerebrospinal fluid is not possible with intravenous antibiotics alone.  We describe the successful treatment of ventriculitis utilizing intrathecal linezolid in a 32-year-old female patient with severe allergy to vancomycin, prohibitive bacterial susceptibilities, and failure of previous attempts to sterilize the cerebrospinal fluid despite multimodal treatment.  Intrathecal linezolid is a useful treatment in the setting of multidrug-resistant bacterial ventriculitis.

Analysis of acute brain slices by electron microscopy: a correlative light-electron microscopy workflow based on Tokuyasu cryo-sectioning.

Acute brain slices are slices of brain tissue that are kept vital in vitro for further recordings and analyses. This tool is of major importance in neurobiology and allows the study of brain cells such as microglia, astrocytes, neurons and their inter/intracellular communications via ion channels or transporters. In combination with light/fluorescence microscopies, acute brain slices enable the ex vivo analysis of specific cells or groups of cells inside the slice, e.

Birbeck granule-like "organized smooth endoplasmic reticulum" resulting from the expression of a cytoplasmic YFP-tagged langerin.

Langerin is required for the biogenesis of Birbeck granules (BGs), the characteristic organelles of Langerhans cells. We previously used a Langerin-YFP fusion protein having a C-terminal luminal YFP tag to dynamically decipher the molecular and cellular processes which accompany the traffic of Langerin. In order to elucidate the interactions of Langerin with its trafficking effectors and their structural impact on the biogenesis of BGs, we generated a YFP-Langerin chimera with an N-terminal, cytosolic YFP tag.

Imaging methods for determining uptake and toxicity of carbon nanotubes in vitro and in vivo.

Demand for carbon nanotubes (CNTs) is increasing rapidly in electrical, mechanical, and health and medical applications due to their thermal, electrical conductive and other properties. The continued commercial up-scaling of CNT production and application needs to be accompanied by an understanding of the occupational health, public safety and environmental implications of these materials. An increasing volume of literature on the toxicity of CNTs is being published; however, the results of these studies are frequently inconclusive.
