New transdermal biosensors measure analytes that diffuse from the bloodstream through the skin, making it important to reduce the system response time and understand measurement output. While highly customized models have been created for specific sensors, a generalized model for transdermal sensor systems is lacking. Here, a simple one-dimensional diffusion model was used to characterize the measurement system and classify biosensors as either flux types or concentration types.

Silver/silver chloride (Ag/AgCl) is ubiquitous in the field of electrochemical biosensing due to its suitability as a reference electrode material. However, we recently discovered that screen-printed Ag/AgCl ink has a detrimental effect on Alcohol Oxidase enzyme stability. We performed an optical absorbance assay to isolate the interaction of enzyme and electrode to discover a surprisingly strong inhibition effect.

However, previous biosensors have suffered from long-term fouling of the sensor element and drift in the resulting sensor readings over time. Here, we report a wearable alcohol sensor platform that solves the problem of sensor fouling by enabling drift-free signals in vivo for up to 24 h and an interchangeable cartridge connection that enables consecutive days of measurement.
