Background:  High levels of precision, as well as controlled, efficient motions, are important components of microsurgical technique and success. An accurate and objective means of skill assessment is lacking in resident microsurgical education. Here we employ three-dimensional, real-time motion-tracking technology to analyze hand and instrument motion during microsurgical anastomoses.

The effects of mechanical vibrations on control system stability could be significant in control systems designed on the assumption of rigid-body dynamics, such as launch vehicles. Vibrational loads can also cause damage to launch vehicles due to fatigue or excitation of structural resonances. This paper investigates a method to control structural vibrations in real time using a finite number of strain measurements from a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensor array.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to explore how maternal race/ethnicity influences the risk factors associated with brachial plexus birth injury (BPBI) among live births in California from 1996-2012.
  • It analyzed data from over 6.2 million maternal-infant pairs and found that Black and Hispanic individuals faced higher risks of obesity, diabetes, and limited prenatal care but lower risks concerning other BPBI-related factors.
  • The findings suggest that these demographic groups are not only at lower risk for factors typically associated with BPBI, but the known risk factors explain only a small portion of the increased BPBI risk, indicating a need to investigate other contributing factors.

Background: The purpose of this study was to externally validate a predictive score for fracture-related infections, establishing generalizability for absolute and relative risk of infection in the setting of orthopedic fracture surgery.

Materials And Methods: This was a retrospective, case-control study performed at a level I academic trauma center that included 147 patients with fracture-related infection in the study group and 300 control patients. We analyzed the same 8 independent predictors of fracture-related infection cited by a previous study.

Background: Patients with secondary metastatic involvement of the musculoskeletal system due to primary cancers are a rapidly growing population with significant risks for health-related end-of-life morbidities. In particular, bone metastases or metastatic bone disease (MBD) imparts significant adversity to remaining quality of life. No rigorous review of clinical trials on the use of supportive care interventions for MBD has been conducted.
