Objective: To examine changes in health insurance coverage when adults age out of dependent coverage at age 26 after the implementation of most Affordable Care Act (ACA) provisions. Our analysis also documented differences by sex, race and ethnicity, and state Medicaid expansion status.
Methods: We used a regression discontinuity design and the 2014-2019 American Community Survey to estimate coverage changes (uninsured, any private, employer-sponsored coverage, direct purchase, and Medicaid) at age 26.
Importance: Although all state Medicaid programs cover children's dental services, less than half of publicly insured children receive recommended care.
Objective: To evaluate the association between the ratio of Medicaid payment rates to dentist charges for an index of services (fee ratio) and children's preventive dental visits, oral health, and school absences.
Design, Setting, And Participants: In this cross-sectional study, a difference-in-differences analysis was conducted between September 2021 and April 2022 of 15 738 Medicaid-enrolled children and a control group of 16 867 privately insured children aged 6 to 17 years who participated in the 2016-2019 National Survey of Children's Health.
Cold-water fishes are becoming increasingly vulnerable as changing thermal conditions threaten their future sustainability. Thermal stress and habitat loss from increasing water temperatures are expected to impact population viability, particularly for inland populations with limited adaptive resources. Although the long-term persistence of cold-adapted species will depend on their ability to cope with and adapt to changing thermal conditions, very little is known about the scope and variation of thermal tolerance within and among conspecific populations and evolutionary lineages.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFMany proteins that hydrolyze ATP or GTP have comparable amino acid residues for which specific roles have been proposed in a mechanism for the chemistry of hydrolysis. These roles include polarization by a glutamate residue of a water molecule for the attack on the γ-phosphoryl group of the nucleotide, stabilization of the transition state by an arginine finger, discrimination between bound nucleoside triphosphate and diphosphate by a γ sensor residue, and coordination by an aspartate of the Mg(2+) that accompanies the substrate nucleotide. We mutated four candidate residues for these roles in the Escherichia coli transcription termination factor Rho, E211, R366, R212, and D265, and characterized the resulting proteins for oligomerization state, ligand binding, RNA-dependent ATP hydrolysis, and, in rapid mix/chemical quench experiments, achievement of the chemistry step of hydrolysis.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFPeptidylarginine deiminase (PAD), which catalyzes the deimination of the guanidino group from peptidylarginine residues, belongs to a superfamily of guanidino group modifying enzymes that have been shown to produce an S-alkylthiouronium ion intermediate during catalysis. Thiol-directed reagents iodoacetamide and iodoacetate inactivate recombinant PAD, and substrate protects the enzyme from inactivation. Activity measurements together with peptide mapping by mass spectrometry of PAD modified in the absence and presence of substrate demonstrated that cysteine-351 is modified by iodoacetamide.
