Background: Mitochondrial disease (MD) is a heterogeneous group of disorders characterized by impaired energy production caused by abnormal oxidative phosphorylation. Diagnosis of MD is challenging given the variability in how the disease can affect an individual's neurologic, cardiovascular, ophthalmologic, or gastroenterological systems.
