Rationale: Staurolite is an important mineral that can reveal much about metamorphic processes. For instance, it dominates the Fe-Mg exchange reactions in amphibolite-facies rocks between about 550 and 700°C, and can be also found at suprasolidus conditions. Staurolite contains a variable amount of OH in its structure, whose determination is a key petrological parameter.

Garnet is the archetypal cubic mineral, occurring in a wide variety of rock types in Earth's crust and upper mantle. Owing to its prevalence, durability and compositional diversity, garnet is used to investigate a broad range of geological processes. Although birefringence is a characteristic feature of rare Ca-Fe garnet and Ca-rich hydrous garnet, the optical anisotropy that has occasionally been documented in common (that is, anhydrous Ca-Fe-Mg-Mn) garnet is generally attributed to internal strain of the cubic structure.

Background: This work is aimed at comparing mucinous colorectal adenocarcinomas (MUC) and non-mucinous colorectal adenocarcinomas (non-MUC), and at verifying the existence of two different subgroups of MUC, in terms of clinicopathological features, chromosomal alterations, and outcome, in a geographical area where mucinous colorectal cancer resulted as being very frequent.

Methods: One hundred and fifty-six unselected patients who underwent curative colorectal resection for sporadic colorectal cancer over a 4-year period were evaluated for histological classification as to MUC and non-MUC subtype, for microsatellite instability (MSI) using six microsatellite markers, and for the presence of p27, Fhit, and cyclooxygenase-2 (Cox-2). Molecular data, immunohistochemical results, recurrence frequency, and patient survival were analyzed statistically in relation to histological subtypes.

We examined retrospectively a series of 184 cases of melanocytic neoplasia of the sole observed and treated as out-patients from January 1977 to December 1987, comparing clinical and histological diagnoses. The original clinical diagnoses were divided into nevi, pigmented lesions of suspected malignancy, cutaneous melanomas and others. Of the 170 cases diagnosed clinically as nevus none was of melanoma.
