Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on reducing opioid use after ventral hernia repair (VHR) by implementing a standardized discharge prescribing protocol, promoting alternative pain relief methods such as ibuprofen and acetaminophen.
  • Data from two six-month periods (before and after protocol implementation) showed a significant 57% decrease in prescribed opioid milligram morphine equivalents (MME), from an average of 322.7 to 141.6 MME after the protocol was introduced.
  • This multimodal approach not only lowered opioid prescriptions but also increased the usage of non-opioid analgesics, reflecting a shift towards safer pain management strategies in postoperative care.

We report our experience with open retromuscular repair of PHs using permanent synthetic mesh. A prospectively maintained database was retrospectively reviewed to identify patients undergoing PH repair.
