The genetics of severe depression.

Genome-wide association studies (GWASs) of major depressive disorder (MDD) have recently achieved extremely large sample sizes and yielded substantial numbers of genome-wide significant loci. Because of the approach to ascertainment and assessment in many of these studies, some of these loci appear to be associated with dysphoria rather than with MDD, potentially decreasing the clinical relevance of the findings. An alternative approach to MDD GWAS is to focus on the most severe forms of MDD, with the hope that this will enrich for loci of larger effect, rendering their identification plausible, and providing potentially more clinically actionable findings.

Shared deficits of education, marital and occupational functioning in unaffected siblings of multiple affected families with major psychiatric illness.

Background: Major psychiatric illnesses often cluster in families, and their impact on affected and unaffected members within families may reflect the consequence of both genetic and social liability.

Methods: Data was derived from 202 families with multiple affected individuals. Affected individuals (N = 259) had a diagnosis of schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder or substance use disorder.

Role of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs on change in macular volume postcataract surgery in diabetic eyes: A retrospective comparative study.

Context: Diabetic eyes suffer from variety of complications including macular edema. Cataract surgery is the most commonly done procedure throughout the world and majority would be diabetics. As pseudophakic-cystoid macular edema (CME) is a known complication following cataract surgery, our study concentrated on finding the role of prophylactic topical nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) on change in total macular volume (TMV) postcataract surgery in diabetic eyes.
