Background: Brady- and tachyarrhythmias commonly complicate adult congenital heart disease (ACHD). Permanent pacemakers (PPMs) or implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs) are often utilised to prevent morbidity or mortality related to arrhythmia, but can also be associated with significant morbidity themselves.

Methods: We analysed outcomes from patients in our comprehensive ACHD database who were seen at least twice since 2000 and once since 2018.

Principles governing the effects of sensory loss on human abilities: An integrative review.

Blindness or deafness can significantly influence sensory abilities in intact modalities, affecting communication, orientation and navigation. Explanations for why certain abilities are enhanced and others degraded include: crossmodal cortical reorganization enhances abilities by providing additional neural processing resources; and sensory processing is impaired for tasks where calibration from the normally intact sense is required for good performance. However, these explanations are often specific to tasks or modalities, not accounting for why task-dependent enhancement or degradation are observed.

Impact of prenatal exposure to delta 9-tetrahydrocannabinol and cannabidiol on birth size and postnatal growth trajectories.

Background: Prenatal exposure to cannabis (or more specifically, delta 9-tetrahydrocannabinol [Δ9-THC]) has been consistently linked to low birthweight. Animal models further show that Δ9-THC is associated with rapid postnatal growth. Whether this association is modified by breastfeeding is unknown.

Evaluation of 16s Long Read Metabarcoding for Characterizing the Microbiome and Salmonella Contamination of Retail Poultry Meat.

The traditional gold standard for detection of Salmonella in meat products is bacterial culture with enrichment. While this method is highly sensitive, it is slow and provides an incomplete assessment of isolate taxonomy in positive samples. This study presents a novel PCR based detection assay which amplifies the 16s-ITS-23s region which is an approximately 2500 base pair region of the larger ribosomal rrn operon.
